Korean Undergraduates’ Conceptual Structure on Characteristics of Self-Actualizer

국문 초록

교육은 왜 필요한가? 교육의 본질은 무엇인가? 교육의 목적은 국가적 차원과 사회적 차원, 그리고 개인적 차원에 따라 서로 다를 수는 있겠지만, 초등교육이든 고등교육이든 교육의 궁극적인 목적은 개인의 자아실현에 있다. 자아실현교육의 내용과 방법은 대상이 누구냐에 따라 조금씩 달라져야 할 것이다. 예를 들어 초등학생이나 중고등학생과 대학생 및 성인을 대상으로 하는 자아실현교육의 방법에는 차이가 있어야 할 것이다. 자아실현교육을 위해서는 우선 자아실현인의 일반적인 특성이 무엇인지를 아는 것이 매우 중요하다. Maslow와 Rogers가 정리한 자아실현인의 특성들이 잘 알려져 있기는 하지만, 대학생을 위한 자아실현교육을 실시하기 위해서는 우선적으로 대학생들이 자아실현에 대해 어떤 개념구조를 가지고 있는지를 알아보는 연구가 선행되어야 할 것이다. 본 연구의 목적은 ‘자아실현인의 특성’에 대해 한국의 대학생들이 어떠한 개념구조를 가지고 있는지를 알아보는 것이다. 본 연구의 대상은 한국의 한 수도권 대학에서 교양과목을 수강하고 있는 2-4학년생 47명이다. 학생들에게 연구의 취지를 설명한 후 ‘자아실현인의 특성’은 무엇이라고 생각하는지에 관해 자유롭게 적어내도록 하였다. 수집된 자료를 연구자가 검토하고 분석한 후 유사한 항목끼리 범주화하여 하위요인을 도출하였다. 자료 분석 결과 대학생들은 자아실현인의 특성에 대해 총 241개의 특징을 적어냈으며 1인당 평균 5.1개의 반응을 하였다. 응답내용을 검토하여 유사한 항목끼리 1차적으로 범주화한 결과 총 19개의 특징으로 범주화할 수 있었다. 이것을 다시 유사한 항목끼리 2차적으로 범주화한 결과, 총 6개의 하위요인을 찾아낼 수 있었다. 그것은 창의성(10.79%), 행복감(16.60%), 성취와 전문성(7.88%), 도전감과 목표지향성(23.65%), 인간관계(7.88%), 그리고 자기이해(33.19%)였다. 본 연구는 자아실현교육에 적용할 수 있는 한국의 대학생들이 생각하는 자아실현인의 특성에 대한 개념구조를 확인하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims at examining what conceptual structure Korean undergraduates have on 'characteristics of self-actualizer'. So, this study was done for 47 sophomores, juniors and seniors who are attending liberal arts at a university in the metropolitan area, Korea. After explaining an intent of the research, students were asked to write down freely on 'characteristics of self-actualizer' they think. Researcher examined and analyzed collected data, categorized similar descriptions, and then derived sub-factors. As the result of data analysis, those undergraduates wrote down 241 characteristics of self-actualizer with the average 5.1 responses per one person. Upon investigation of response contents, similar items were categorized firstly, leading to the total 19 characteristics. And again, as the result of the second categorization on similar items. 6 sub-factors could be identified. They were creativity (10.79%), sense of happiness (16.60%), achievement and professionalism (7.88%), challenge and goal orientation (23.65%), human relationship (7.88%) and self-understanding (33.19%). This research has significance in that it identified a conceptual structure on characteristics of self-actualizer Korean undergraduates think applicable to education of self-actualization
