한반도 출토 왜계 갑주(倭係 甲冑)의 분포와 의미

국문 초록

삼국시대에는 많은 철제 갑주가 다양한 형태로 확인된다. 주목할 점은 한반도와 일본 열도에서 동일한 계통의 갑주가 확인된다는 것이다. 삼국시대에는 일본열도와 관련된 많은 왜계 문화요소가 확인되는데 갑주도 제작 기술이나 정황 등으로 보아 왜계 유물로 판단된다. 그런데 왜계 갑주는 당시 왜정권의 상징적인 유물로 평가되므로 한반도와의 관계를 둘러싸고 많은 이견이 있었다. 기왕의 연구에서는 한반도 출토 왜계 갑주의 제작지 문제에만 관심을 기울였을 뿐, 한반도에서 출토된 왜계 갑주의 출현 배경과 의미에 대한 구체적인 검토가 결여되어 있었다. 또한 가야지역은 왜계 갑주가 집중되어 이와 관련된 논의가 활발하였지만 백제와 신라에서 출토된 왜계 갑주에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 미흡 하다. 이에 본고는 한반도 출토 왜계 갑주를 종합적으로 정리하고 부장 양상 및 분포 양상을 검토하여 그 의미를 검토해 보았다. 대금계 갑주 및 왜계 찰갑의 형식 분류와 전개 양상을 살펴 보았다. 이를 바탕으로 고구려를 제외한 삼국 모두 왜계 갑주가 확인되며 각국의 상황에 따라 그 수용 배경과 의미가 다름을 알 수 있었다. 기왕의 연구는 이러한 왜계 갑주의 한반도 분포가 왜왕권의 철소재 입수와 같은 교역에 따른 군사적 진출로 평가되거나 가야에 집중된 자료만으로 왜와 가야의 관계 중심으로 설명되는 경향이 강하였다. 그러나 삼국은 자국의 이해에 따라 왜계 갑주를 수용했을 가능성이 크다. 왜와 적대적인 관계가 유지된 것으로 이해된 신라는 왜계 갑주를 통해 볼 때 당시 신라의 영토 확장 정책과 관련하여 왜와 군사적 교 류가 있었을 가능성이 있다. 또한 백제 역시 일찍부터 왜계 갑주가 확인되는데 영산강 유역에서 확인되는 전방후원분 출토 왜계 갑주는 위세품이라기보다 백제의 남방을 감시 하는 왜계 백제관료의 성격을 나타내는 유물로 이해된다.

영문 초록

A lot of iron armors in various shapes from the three kingdoms period have been excavated, and it is quite noticeable that same types of armors are found both in Korea and Japan. Japan related cultural factors have been identified from the remains of the three kingdoms period, and these armors are believed to be one of them regarding to the manufacturing techniques or circumstances. Since Japanese style armors are viewed as the symbolic remains of Japanese authority at that time, there have been many debates upon the relationship between Korea and Japan. One of the most frequently discussed issues is about the manufacturing site of Daegeum type armors, which is most likely to be considered Japanese style armors through increasing data and rigorous analysis on the structure. However, it becomes more complicated when clarifying the reason and purpose of Japanese style armors being introduced to Korea. Previous studies focused on the manufacturing sites of Japanese style armors found in Korea, and lacked detailed reviews on the background and meanings of those armors. In addition, studies on the armors excavated in Baekje and Shilla area are not sufficient compare to those from Yongnam province, the old Gayaarea. This study was to provide comprehensive data about Japanese style armors found across the country, and to examine the meaning through the investigation of burial aspects and distribution. The result is that Japanese style armors were identified every area except Corea, and the introduction background and meanings are different depending on each kingdom’s circumstance. Previous studies tended to explain the reason of distribution of Japanese style armors in the Korean peninsular by focusing on the relationship between Gaya and Japan; Japan wanted to acquire iron ores from Gaya, and Japan wanted to establish their outpost on Gaya to acquire iron ores. However, it is highly possible that each of three kingdoms adopted Japanese style armors for their own interest. Although it is considered that Shilla was hostile toward Japan, it is also highly possible for Shilla to trade military products with Japan. Furthermore, Japanese style armors were found out over the Baekje area, and Japanese style armors that were found out from the keyhole-shaped tomb of the Youngsan River area are not Wishinjae, but relics which show characteristics of Baekje’s officials who protected the southern Baekje.
