영화 속 흡연 장면에 대한 메타분석:1990-2010년 펍메드(PubMed) 논문을 중심으로

국문 초록

오늘날 엔터테인먼트 미디어의 폭발적인 증가와 보급에도 불구하고 이들이 건강에 미치는 영향은 충분히 알려지지 않았다. 미디어 엔터테인먼트 중에서 특히 흥행 영화는 전세계적으로 수억명이 관람하며 여타 매체보다 몰입도가 높다. 이 논문은 1990-2010년 펍메드(PubMed)에 등재된 논문을 대상으로 영화 속 흡연 장면에 대한 메타분석을 수행하여 헬스커뮤니케이션과 공중보건 측면에서의 함의를 분석하였다. 연구대상은 MeSH 키워드를 이용해 체계적으로 추출한 논문 16편과 미국폐협회에서 발간한 네 편의 보고서이다. 연구진은 연구대상 문헌들을 분석 기간, 분석 단위, 평가자 간 신뢰도, 흡연 장면의 측정 방법 등으로 체계적으로 분류한 후에 흡 연 장면의 빈도, 흡연의 맥락, 흡연 배우의 특징, 건강 결과를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 1950년 이후 미국의 흥행 영화들에서 나타난 흡연 장면의 횟수는 1950년대에 시간당 10.7회였고 1980년대에는 4.9회로 감소했으나 2000년대에는 다시 10.9회로 증가했다. 2000년대 이후 영화들을 보면 총 상영 시간에서 흡연 장면이 차지하는 비율은 4%에 그쳤으나 1990년대 이후 미국의 흡연율이 하락해 왔음에도 불구하고 영화 속 흡연 장면은 줄어들지 않았다. 흡연자 로 등장한 영화 배우들은 대개 매력도가 높고 사회적으로 바람직한 인물로 묘사된 경우가 많았다. 그리고 간접 광고의 하나로 담배 브랜드를 노출시키는 경우도 잦았다. 그러나 흥행 영화가 갖는 엄청난 관객 도달치에도 불구하고 담배가 해롭다는 건강 메시지를 담은 영화는 전체의 3.5%-7%에 그쳤다. 이번 연구는 영화 속 흡연 장면들의 빈도와 특징들을 감안할 때 관객들에게 미칠 수 있는 영향이 상당히 클 수 있음을 보여준다. 특히 흡연 장면은 청소년 등에게 학습될 가능성이 높고 관객이 흡연 배우에게 감정이입 되었을 경우에 흡연 행동에 대한 맥락을 긍정적으로 강화할 가능성이 있다.

영문 초록

Despite exponential growth and spread of the entertainment media these days, little is known about its impact on human health. Among various media entertainment, hit films have the highest immersion level compared to the rest of the media as it is viewed by thousands or even billions of people. This research is a meta-analytic study that comprehensively deals with the results of content analysis on smoking scenes of the movies, especially referring to papers published at PubMed from 1990 to 2010. Areas of research cover sixteen papers that include MeSH keywords and four reports released by American Lung Association. We made systematic classification on the documents of the research areas according to analysis period, unit of analysis, inter-rater reliability, and measuring methods of smoking scenes. It then analyzed their exposure effect such as frequency of smoking scenes, context of the smoking scenes, characteristics of actors/actresses and health consequences. According to the result, the number of smoking scenes in the American hit films since 1950s turned out to be 10.7 per hour in 1950s, which was reduced to 4.9 per hour in 1980s to rise again to 10.9 per hour in 2000s. For movies released after 2000s, smoking scenes accounted for only four percent of the running time, but smoking scenes in the movies were not declined despite reduced smoking rate in the US since 1990s. In most of the cases, actors or actresses who appeared smoking in the movies were portrayed as having highly charming characters and socially desirable personalities. Moreover, there were many cases of brand appearance in which tobacco brands were exposed as part of indirect advertisement. Only 3.5 to 7 percent of the hit movies delivered the message that smoking was harmful to our health. Smoking scenes in the movies are highly likely to be imitated by adolescent, and when audience experience sincere empathy with the smoking actors or actresses, the context behind the smoking scenes is also likely to be positively reinforced.
