Telecommunication Infrastructure in the Context of Infant and Child Mortality: A Two-wave International Longitudinal Investigation

국문 초록

구조화 이론에 따르면 구조와 행위자는 상호의존 적 관계 안에 존재하며, 이 구조들은 인간의 행동을 제약하기도 하고 촉진하기도 한다. 구조화 이론을 건강 불평등 문제에 접목시 켰을 때, 우리는 커뮤니케이션 인프라가 국가적 보건 측면에서 제약적인, 그리고 촉진적인 역할을 수행 할 것임을 추정해 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 국가의 정보통신망이 유아, 아동 사망률에 미치는 장기적 영향을 측정하기 위해 인구 천 명당 전화회선의 평균 숫자를 변수로 사용했다. 세계개발 지수를 이용해 202개 국가를 대상으로 종단적 회귀분석을 적용해 본 결과, 텔레커뮤니케이션 인프라와 유아, 아동 사망률 간에 유의미한 부적 상관관계가 존재하는 것으로 확인되었다. 정보 통신망의 투자가 늘어날수록 유아 및 아동 사망률이 감소하는 추세는 평균 국민소득, 아동 예 방접종지수, 인구당 의사숫자, 1980년 유아 및 아동 사망률을 통제했을 때에도 여전히 유의미 한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 본 연구의 발견은 헬스커뮤니케이션 연구에 구조와 사회적 연결망 중심적인 접근이 필요함을 보여준다.

영문 초록

Structuration theory proposes that structures and agents exist in an interdependent relationship, and that structures both constrain and enable human action. The extrapolation of structuration theory to health inequities suggests the relevance of communication infrastructures in their constraining and enabling roles in health contexts. In this study, we used the number of telephone mainlines per 1,000 persons to measure the influence of the telecommunication infrastructure of a country on infant and child mortality over time. The nonergodic regression models with data from the World Development Indicators containing 202 countries confirmed the negative longitudinal association between the measure of information and telecommunication infrastructure and infant or child mortality ratio. These relationships are robust even after controlling for degree of GDP per capita, child immunization ratio, physician ratio and infant or child mortality in 1980 indicating initial states. The findings of this study provide empirical evidence supporting the call for structure-centered approaches to the study of health communication.
