This work aims to identify co-opetition between different maritime organizations that may create competitive advantage or collaborative advantage together. After reviewing literature related to co-opetition and collaborative advantage in a supply chain context within a container port, this paper investigated corporate motivations for engaging in co-opetition, the advantages for participants and features of collaborative advantage. The paper proposed a framework for collaborative advantage derived from co-opetition in accordance with both resource-based and relational views. This study contributed to the theoretical understanding of relational rent and collaborative advantage involving different types of organizations in the maritime industry and exhorts related organizations to engage in cooperative activities. Strategic management in maritime organizations has typically highlighted competition for competitive advantage to maximize internal corporate profits, rather than inter-firm interconnections. To build collaborative advantage requires harmonization of corporate strategic interactions relating to competition and co-operation with other organizations such as partners or competitors. Traditional conceptualizations of ports as independent supply chains aiming to maximize profits internally militate against this. However, to generate port-wide reciprocal benefits for organizations, ports must facilitate co-operative behavior among supply chains to satisfy shippers' needs to move cargo and information seamlessly. Prior studies featured horizontal relationships rather than vertical co-opetition relationships between container terminal operators and other supply chain partners. This work notes that vertical integration might limit the choice of shippers, reduce competition or raise costs compared with strategic partnerships or co-operation. Since this study is theoretical in nature, further research directions and conclusions were included.
