영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to study vowel-shortening in Egyptian Arabic. Arabic which belongs to the Semitic Languages has a diglossia structure - Literary(LA) and Colloquial Arabic(CA). LA is the standard and written language which is effected by religion (Islam), while CA is the oral language used in dialects of many areas and hasn't been written in letters except in modem novels of the recent days, and to which Egyptian Arabic(EA) belongs. Long vowels and diphthongs in LA are shortened in EA in the following conditions : In the word-final position, the vowel-shortening is occurred most frequently because LA has no stress in such position.. And diphthongs are also shortened into one vowel in the word-final position. Vowel-shortening of long vowels and diphthongs is also observed in non-stressed syllables because of their having nan-stresses. Vowel-shortening is occurred in the cases of affixing of the syntactic morphemes and in the position of long vowels before two consonants. In some of these cases deletion of non-stressed short vowels is concurred with vowel-shortening. And in junction the long vowels are shortened in weaker stressed word relatively.
