국문 초록

'예술어'(artistic language)는 문학적인 측면뿐만 아니라 언어학적인 측면에서도 독자에게 익숙한 일상 언어라는 영역을 뛰어 넘으며 그한계를 시험하곤 한다. 이 현상은 개개 언어의 언어구조에 따라 정도의 차이는 있지만 모든 언어와 문화권에서 발생한다. 러시아어의 경우 조어성(파생 형태론)은 러시아어의 언어적 창조성(linguistic creativity)에 매우 중요한 역할을 담당한다. 영어의 경우 어휘의 창조가 어원에 기반을 두고 있는 함축적인 뉘앙스에 의존하는 것과는 달리, 러시아어는 조어 양식(틀)안에서 현존하는 어휘를 '수정'함으로써 언외(言外)의 의미(connotations)를 전달한다. 러시아 문학사에 기리는 주요 작가들 중 은세기 시인 흐례브니코프 는 그의 문학 세계를 표현하는데 있어서 조어성이라는 장치를 가장 광범위하게 활용한 작가 중 하나라고 할 수 있다. 그의 작품들에는 새로이 '주조된' 단어들이 빈번히 들장하며 몇 몇 작품들은 문자 그대로 번역이 불가능하기도 하다. 흘례브니코프의 이러한 특징은 러시아어의 예술적인 측면에 관심을 가지는 언어학자들에게 훌륭한 자료를제공한다. 이 논문에서는 러시아어의 형태론 구조 내에서 위에서 제시한 각각 의 유형에 해당하는 예제를 분석하고 그들의 언어학적인 관점에서 예술적인 기능에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Among major figures in Russian literary history, the Silver Age poet Velemir Xlebnikov is the one who made the most extensive use of word formation devices to enrich his poetic voice. Some of his poetry is literally untranslatable, because its meaning is derived from the newly coined words that the poet includes. They often comprise a remarkably high percentage of the entire poem, and the translator has no equivalent resources to render these artistic formations. This feature of Xlebnikov's work has made him a popular target for linguists interested in artistic aspects of the Russian language. In this paper I'd like to present a small typology of Xlebnikov's artistic formations, categorizing them in three groups: 1) real potential words; 2) remotely possible words; 3) virtually impossible words that still function artistically. I analyze examples in each category in terms of their status within the Russian system of derivational morphology and their artistic function within the poem. It should be understood that I approach these literary texts as a linguist, not a literary critic. I am interested in them primarily for the unique examples they provide, not for global generalizations about Xlebnikov's style, philosophy, or poetic voice.
