국문 초록

이 논문에서 필자는 17세기 조선왕실의 王陵 선정 과정에서 方外地師의 참여양태와 역할을 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 인조와 효종, 현종 대의 왕릉조성과 관련된 『조선왕조실록』과 『승정원일기』, 『山陵都監儀軌』 등의 자료들을 토대로 방외지사가 초빙되는 과정과 방외지사의 신분 및 활동 등을 정리하였다. 방외지사란 한양의 조정에서 벼슬을 하고 있지 않은 이들로서 擇地, 혹은 風水地理 지식에 조예가 깊은 자들이다. 선왕이 승하하고 난 이후 禮曹와 觀象監을 중심으로 능지를 선정할 때에 조정에서는 수차례 방외지사를 초빙하여 산릉 후보지들의 看審과 왕릉지의 최종 결정 과정에 참여하도록 하였다. 조선시대 왕릉택지의 과정에서는 이들 외에도 국왕과 사대부 문관 대신들도 주요한 행위자들로서 참여하였다. 필자는 이들 여러 행위자들이 왕릉지를 선정하면서 논쟁하였던 모습들을 현종대 초기에 효종 寧陵의 터를 선정하는 과정을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 그리고 이 과정에서 당시 방외지사들의 역할이 어떠하였는지를 논의하였다.

영문 초록

In this article, I examine the role of 'the invited geomancers', Bangwejisa (方外地師) in the decision process of the site of royal tombs in the 17th century Korea. For this purpose, I analysed The Anals of Joseon Dynasty, The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty, and The Royal Protocols of the Joseon Dynasty (Uigwe) related to the royal funerals in the 17th century Korea. The invited geomancers means the geomancers or Fengshui (風水) expert who had reputation on the knowledge of geomancy, but had not the official position in the royal court. They were invited in the many phases of royal funerals and construction process of royal tombs. They participated in the process of investigation on 'the candidate sites' with the officer geomancers of Gwansanggam (觀象監), and in the discussion on the appropriate site for royal tombs. I show the invitation process of the them and their social status with the examples of two geomancers, Yi gan and Ban Houi. I also show the King and confucian ministers had participated as major actors in the decision process. I show the dispute on the appropriate site for royal tomb Yeongleung (寧陵) between the King Hyeongjong and his ministers, and examine the roles of invited geomancers in this process.
