각진국사 복구(復丘)와 불교계 동향

국문 초록

본 연구는 수선사의 제13세 각진국사 복구(復丘)의 생애와 그가 활동했던 고려 원간섭기(元干涉期)의 불교계 동향을 고찰한 것으로 복구의 가계인 고성(固城) 이씨의 내력과 그가 주석한 백암사(白巖寺,현 백양사)를 중심으로 살펴본 것이다. 원간섭기에 명문사족(名門士族)의 가문에서 태어나 고려후기의 대표적 사원인 수선사(修禪社)를비롯해 백암사, 불갑사(佛甲寺) 등에 주석하며 활동한 복구의 행적은 당시 불교계의 다양한 변화 양상과, 정치계의 현실을 반영하고 있어서 연구의 의미는 크다고 할 수 있다. 이존비(李尊庇) 대에 명문가로 부상한 고성 이씨 가문에서 태어난 복구는 친인척으로 백이정, 박충좌와 같은 성리학자도 있었지만, 불교신앙이 돈독했던 어머니와 외가(外家)인 이행검 가계의 영향을 받아 불가에 귀의했던 것으로 보인다. 수선사의 제5세 천영(天英)을 스승으로 하여 출가한 복구는 1320년경 수선사 제13세 주지로 부임하여 134 0년경 백암사로 옮겨갈 때까지 약 20년간 주석하였다. 수선사는 당시 원간섭기 불교계의 전반적인 동향에 비추어볼 때 무인정권기와는 달리 사세(寺勢)는 쇠락한 상태에 있었고, 지눌보다는 몽산(蒙山)의 선사상에 영향을 크게 받았던 것으로 예견된다. 몽산선은 원간섭기에 들어와 수선사뿐만 아니라 가지산문에서도 적극 수용되면서 크게 유행했던 것이다. 복구는 만년인 1340년경 유년시절과 20대에 머물었던 백암사(白巖寺)에 주지하였을 때 친조카 이암(李嵒)과 함께 발원하여 중창(重創)불사를 크게 열었다. 이것은 후대에 백암사가 이씨 가계의 원찰(願刹)로 변모되는 단초가 되기도 했다. 복구는 불갑사에 주석하던 때인 충정왕 2년(1350)과 공민왕 1년(1352)에 왕사(王師)로 책봉되었다. 그리고 공민왕 4년(1355) 백암사에서 입적하였고 시호를 각진국사(覺眞國師)라 하였다. 백암사는 복구와 이암 후대에도 이씨 가문에 의해 운영, 유지되며 국가의 통제를 벗어나기도 했는데, 이처럼 한 사원이 특정가계의 원찰로 변모된 사실에서 당시 불교계 세속화의 일면을 엿볼수 있다.

영문 초록

This research looked into the career of the national preceptor Gakjin Bokgu( ), the 13th abbot of Suseonsa Temple(修禪社), and the trend of Buddhism circle of Won(元) intervention period in Goryeo dynasty, focusing on the history of Goseong(固城)-Yi(李) family and Baekamsa Temple(白巖寺). It is a very meaningful because the achievements of Bokgu who was born into a good family in the Won intervention period and resided in the Suseonsa which was the typical temple in the late Goryeo including Baekamsa, Bulgapsa Temple(佛甲寺), reflected many kinds of changes of Buddhism circle and politics at that time. Bokgu who was born into Yi family, which leaped into a good clan in the Bokgu's father generation, had relatives of new Confucianism scholars such as Baek i-jung( 正), Park chung-jwa(朴忠佐), but it seems that he became a Buddhist monk because he was influenced by his mother and uncle Yi haeng-geom(李行儉) on his mother's side, both of them had devout faith in Buddhism. He who made the 5th abbot of Suseonsa, Wono Cheonyeong(圓悟天英), his mater and became a monk, resided in the Suseonsa as the 13th abbot for twenty years until he moved in Baekamsa in 1320 or thereabouts. Suseonsa was declining in those days, and it is speculated that Suseonsa was influenced by the thought of Mongsan( ) than Jinul(知訥) unlike the soldier government period in the context of the general trend of Buddhism circle. The thought of Mongsan was actively accepted by Mt. Gaji-san(迦智山) sect as well as Suseonsa, and was very popular among Goryeo monks during the Ueon intervention period. Bokgu resided in the Baekamsa in his infancy and twenties, and he greatly reconstructed the temple with his cousin Yi am(李 ) in 1340 or thereabouts. This fact was a starting point that Baekamsa was changed into the temple of being managed by Yi family. When Bokgu resided in Bulgapsa, he was proclaimed royal preceptor in 1350, 1352. He died at Baekamsa in 1355, and was granted a posthumous epithet, national preceptor Gakjin(覺眞). Deviated from the control of the government, Baekamsa was also managed by descendants of Yi family since Bokgu and Yi am generation. We can get a glimpse of Buddhist secularization from the fact that Baekamsa was transformed into the temple for praying to Buddha for the happiness and good luck of one family.
