실업과 소득격차가 자살에 미치는 영향검증

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 실업과 소득격차가 자살에 미치는 영향을 시계열 분석방법을 이용하여 검증하고자 하는데 있다. 한국 사회는 OECD 국가 중에서 실업률이 매우 낮은 편에 속하는 국가임에도 불구하고 청년실업과 노령자들의 실업은 사회적인 문제로 대두되고 있다. 또한 한국사회에서 가중되고 있는 소득격차는 중산층 및 하층민들에게 상대적 박탈감을 증대시키고 있으며 이는 자살이라는 극단적인 선택으로 내몰리게 하는 결과를 초래하고 있는지도 모른다. 이에 이 연구에서는 실업과 소득격차의 변화가 자살률에 미치는 영향을 시계열 분석을 통하여 검증하고자 하였다. 이 연구에 사용된 자료는 국가통계포털 수집된 1995년 1월에서 2008년 12월까지 14년간의 실업률, 소득격차, 자살률에 관한 월별자료이다. 통계분석에 사용한 분석방법은 ARIMA 회귀분석이다. 통계분석 결과를 살펴보자면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 실업률은 소득격차에 정적인 관련성을 나타내는 반면 자살률에서는 통계적으로 유의미한 결과를 보여주지 못하였다. 하지만 분석기간을 분리하여 분석한 결과 IMF 경제위기로 실업률이 급격하게 증가 한 시기에는 실업률이 자살률과 정적인 관계를 보였으나 경제적 안정기에는 실업률의 증가가 오히려 자살률을 감소시키는 효과를 나타내었다. 둘째, 소득격차는 자살률에 정적인 관련성을 보였으나 그 결과를 해석하는데 주의가 필요하다. 소득격차의 정도보다는 소득격차의 폭이 증가하는 속도가 자살률에 보다 관련되는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 한 국가의 경제적 규모를 나타내는 국내총생산은 소득격차와 자살률에 정적인 영향력을 나타내었다. 마지막으로 고령화 될수록 자살률은 증대할 것으로 예측되었다.

영문 초록

The primary goal of this study is to test the effect of unemployment and inequality of income on suicide through time series analysis. Among OECD countries, Korean, generally showing the lower rate of unemployment, encounters higher rate of unemployment of youths and elders. In addition, enhancing income gaps in Korea increases the sense of deprivation to the middle and low class people, which may result them to chose an avenue of suicide. Therefore, this study attempts to test the effect of unemployment and inequality of income on suicide through time series analysis. The data used in this study were the 1995 to 2008 monthly data including unemployment rate, income gaps, and suicide rate from Korean Bureau of National Statistic. Major statistical analysis is ARIMA time series analysis model. The followings are the results of statistical analyses. First, unemployment rates show positive relationships with income gaps whereas it fails to show insignificant relations with suicide rates. However, supplemental analyses by separating the data shows that in the period of IMF economic crisis rapidly increasing higher unemployment rates the unemployment rates has positive relations with suicide rates, in the stable period of economy the increment of unemployment rate decreases the rates of suicide. Secondly, we need to interpret carefully the fact that income gaps show positive relations with suicide. Since rather than the degree of income gaps the speed of the larger wealth gaps correlate with suicide. Third, GDP, reflecting the size of economy in a country, shows positive relationships with income gaps and the rates of suicide. Finally, getting into the graying of society, we will see the higher suicide rates.
