국문 초록

시민의 범죄에 대한 두려움 수준은 지나치게 과도하고 바람직하지 못한 현상이라는 것은 이미 많은 연구를 통해 공론화되었다. 특히, 여성과 남성의 범죄피해 수준과 범죄 두려움의 수준에서 보여 지는 모순적인 현상(범죄피해-두려움의 패러독스)을 설명하기 위해 범죄에 대한 두려움의 연구영역에서 많은 시도가 있었다. 대표적으로 여성의 신체적 취약성, 보고되지 않은 여성의 범죄피해, 편향된 측정도구의 문제, 성역할 사회화이론 등을 통한 설명이 시도되었다. 하지만 이 연구에서는 기존 설명들에서 발견되는 문제점과 설명의 보완방안에 대해 진화심리학적 관점을 활용하였다. 연구 결과 다음과 같은 결론이 도출되었다. 우선 기존 '범죄피해-두려움의 패러독스'에 대한 설명방식 가운데 진화심리학의 관점에서 여성의 숨은 범죄피해가설과 편향된 측정도구 가설은 기각되었고, 취약성가설은 일부 채택되었으며, 성역할 사회화이론은 설명이 가능한 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 여성의 범죄두려움이 남성에 비해 과일반화된 것은 적응적 보수주의 이론 및 양육투자이론에 따라 합리적인 적응이고, 남성이 여성에 비해 범죄 두려움 수준이 낮은 것은 성 선택설의 입장에서 타당한 행동양식이라는 것이다. 또한 성역할 사회화이론에 대해 진화심리학은 성 선택설과 딸 보호가설을 바탕으로 합당한 것으로 보았다. 끝으로, 남성과 여성의 범죄 두려움을 설명하는 요인들을 분석함으로써 각각 별개의 모형이 제시된 점은 기존의 주류범죄학이 갖고 있던 한계를 극복하여 진화심리학이 이 분야에 유용한 분석 도구로 활용될 수 있음을 보여주었다.

영문 초록

Presently, public levels of fear of crime are generally considered to be excessive and undesirable. Their reduction is a recurrent policy target. This article argues in favour of an evolutionary explanation for the fact that women are more fearful of crime than men while they are less often victimized. That is, it tests the victimization experiences, vulnerability, and risk perception models to determine their relative predictive capacity across separate female and male citizen samples on fear of crime. The findings suggest that fear of crime among women does not represent a real higher risk of being victimized, is not primarily linked to the risk of being raped, and is not an isolated phenomenon. Indeed, women seem in general more fearful of all kinds of crime than men. So, this research suggest that women's hidden crime victimization and biased measurement problem is not adaptive. And vulnerability hypothesis is partially accepted, the gender role socialization theory also accepted. Especially, the point of evolutionary psychology, the fact that women's fear of crime was over generalized is reasonal adaptation with adaptational conservatism theory, and sexual selection hypothesis. Gender role socialization theory also accord to sexual selection hypothesis and daughter protection hypothesis. Eventually, this research analysis the factor which affects the gender differences of fear of crime. It find out that men's and women's fear of crime is differ from each other, so the evolutionary psychological approaches are useful.
