영문 초록

There has recently been a trend of publishing foreign language texts that print movie scripts from which the reader can then practice their English speaking and listening skills. It is no wonder since, after all, movies provide scenarios that put words, expressions and idioms into context, among other advantages. Some people doubt that they develop reading skills through movies. This study investigates that possibility. The novel Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and the Harry Potter movies were used in this study. This sixteen-week experiment used fifty subjects from a higher education environment. They were tested once a week for seventy to eighty minutes each time. The subjects' achievement tests, two presentations and general participation were quantitatively recorded. The results were very satisfactory. The subjects received very high scores in their achievement tests, especially in the area of translation. Their presentations showed that reading can be successfully learned and taught through movies. And, their general participation results proved that movies are a powerful method for comprehending an entire text. In summary, using movies is a recommended way of developing and improving reading skills.
