사설시조 속의 가족과 그 주변인들

국문 초록

사설시조는 우리 문학사에서 대단히 문제적인 갈래로서, 그동안 지속적으로 학문적 연구의 대상이 되어 왔다. 사설시조를 여성주의적 시각에서 다룰 때, 기존의 연구들에서 해명되지 못한 많은 문제들에 중요한 단서를 제공해 줄 것이라 기대한다. 본고 역시 여성주의적 시각에서 사설시조를 다루고 있으며, 특히 가족의 문제를 다룬 작품들을 대상으로 하였다. 사설시조에서 다뤄지고 있는 가족의 형상은 특정 구성원들 사이의 면모가 부각되어 나타나고 있다. 그러한 경향 역시 사설시조의 양식적인 특질에서 비롯되는 것이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 본고에서는 그 중에서도 특히 시어머니와 며느리의 관계와, 본처와 첩 사이의 문제를 다루고 있는 작품들을 중심으로 검토하였다. 일반적으로 며느리는 기존의 가족 구성원들 사이에 새롭게 편입된 존재로서 그 가족에 완전히 동화될 때까지의 일정 기간 '주변인'으로의 특징을 지니게 되지만, 남편을 사이에 둔 첩과의 사이에서는 오히려 핵심적인 가족 구성원이라는 성격을 동시에 지니고 있다. 대체로 고부(姑婦) 사이의 관계가 결혼이라는 제도에서 파생된 문제라고 한다면, 처첩(妻妾)의 갈등은 '처첩제(妻妾制)'를 용인했던 당대 사회의 관습에서 발생하고 있다고 하겠다. 대체로 이들 사이의 관계에서는 갈등의 양상이 우세하게 나타나고 있으며, 특히 사회적 약자라고 할 수 있는 며느리와 첩의 처지를 긍정적으로 그리고 있는 경우가 많았다. 또한 사설시조에서는 고부ㆍ처첩 사이의 갈등의 문제를 여성들만의 문제로 부각시키고 있으며, 그러한 원인을 야기시킨 남성들의 존재가 대부분의 작품에 분명하게 드러나지 않는다는 점도 중요한 특징이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Saseolsijo is a controversial genre in our literary history, and it is continuously studied for scholastic pursuit. When the Saseolsijo is treated in the view of feminism, it could provide an important clue for solving a lot of unexplained problems in the studies up until now. This study also treats Saseolsijo in the view of feminism, and focused especially on the literary works that matter with family relation. The pattern of family being treated in Saseolsijo raises an aspect between specific characters. Those trends might be also arisen from the patterned features. This study focused the literary works which treats the problem, especially on the relation between mother-in-law & daughter-in-laws, and wife & concubine. Generally, daughter-in-law is considered as an 'outsider' for the time being completely adapted in the family because she is a newly included member of family. At the same time, the daughter-in-law also carries the heart character of family when she is considered on the relation between wife and concubine. The relation between mother-in-law & daughter-in-law was a problem caused by the system of marriage at most, and the conflict between wife and concubine caused by the social tradition that permitted 'the system of wife-concubine' at that time. The feature of conflict was shown predominantly among those relations, and the situation of daughter-in-law and concubine was depicted positively because they are underdog in the society. The conflict between mother-in-law & daughter-in-laws, and wife & concubine was raised on the problem of female only, and the male who are the cause of the problem was not obvious on the Saseolsijo. The obscurity of male characters in the works might be an important feature of Saseolsijo.
