여성 인물의 정체성 구현 방식을 통해 본 젠더 수사의 경계와 여성 독자의 취향

국문 초록

19세기 서울의 세책점에서 유통된 것으로 알려진 <하진양문록> 여주인공 하씨가 '옥윤', '성선', '재옥'의 세 가지 이름으로 살아가면서 부여받거나 스스로 구축하고 타협한 다중적 정체성이 상호 충돌하고 간섭하는 현상을 통해 주체 중심의 정체성 구성과 그 사회적 설득에 관한 복합적 차원의 접근을 시도한 작품이다. 이 세 이름은 각각 생래적이고 태생적인 여성으로서의 삶(옥윤), 삶의 과정에서 발견하고 스스로 요청한 남성의 외피를 두른 삶(재옥), 그리고 자기 운명의 기원이자 궁극적 지향점이기도 한 신성한 삶(성선)이라는 세 겹의 영역을 표상한다. '옥윤'과 '성선'이 특정 시기에 호명되고 이후로는 안으로 온축되고 겉으로는 호명되지 않았던 데 비해, '재옥'은 호명되는 순간, 그 이름의 유효성이 지속된다. 이는 '시속부녀'에 대한 폄하적 인식과 이를 넘어선 새로운 여성상을 구현하고자 하는 욕망이 개입한 결과로서, 하씨가 남성의 삶이 허락한 사회적 '인정(recognition)'과 '자부심'을 추구했음을 보여준다. 이름이 바뀌는 과정에서 하씨의 (성)정체성은 중층적이고 분산적이어서, 완전히 통합되거나 승화적 초월을 이루고 있지 않다. 하씨가 지닌 다중 정체성은 상호 충돌하고 중첩되면서 내면을 간섭하고 그를 둘러싼 관계망을 혼란에 빠뜨린다. 이처럼 하씨의 정체성 구현 과정에서 보여주는 분산성과 혼동성이야말로 이 작품이 제안하는 여성성의 새로운 측면으로 볼 수 있다. 하씨의 다중 정체성 구현 과정을 수사학적 차원에서 분석하면, '남성적인 여성'을 표현하는 수사가 일상적 차원에서는 존재하지 않았기 때문에 '남성 안의 여성', 또는 '여성을 숨긴 남성'을 표현하는 수사적 표현이 창안되어 있으며, 남성적 어휘와 여성적 어휘를 혼용함으로써 하씨의 양성적 매력을 부각하는 수사학을 채택하고 있다. 또한, 성품과 자질, 능력의 차원에서 존경할 만한 여성상을 수사적 차원에서 실현하는 과정에서 옥윤 시절부터 배태하고 있던 탁월성의 자질과 신성성의 가치를 여성적 삶, 여성을 초월한 삶의 층위에서 극대화하는 방식을 채택하였다. 하씨의 형상화 방식은 성과 젠더를 둘러싼 사회학적 쟁투의 장에서 여성 인물이 '자기'를 실현하고 사회적으로 설득하는 문학적 상상의 모의적 놀이로 실험되었다. 독자들은 서술자와 작중 인물들의 전적인 지지를 받는 탁월한 여성 하씨의 생애를 통해 존경받는 여성의 삶, 가치 있는 여성성의 의미, 자기 주도적 삶의 의미에 관한 내적 사유를 경험할 기회를 갖게 되었다.

영문 초록

HaJinYangMoonRok, a novel which was borrowed through several book-renter shops in Seoul, was portrayed a female protagonist Miss. Ha who had multi-identities and lived tripled lives with three named; Ok-yoon, Jae-ok, and Seong-sun. Three names permitted her three different lives; Ok-yoon, a given name, represented an identity as a daughter and fiancee, Jae-ok, a self made name, permitted a successful man's glorious life as a high level government official and general with man's clothes, and Seong-sun, a name was called from her taoist master, led her to an unworldly person's life. Especially the second name, Jae-ok, was used continuously amongst the other characters and also herself until the end of the story, because only the name permitted her some special meaningful experience; to get some social recognition and self-esteem. Such three lives and identities conflicted and interfered with one another. In processes of changing her names, her multi identities were overlapped, dispersed, and never integrated. Such confused situations made contemporary readers experienced a newly created female image. This novel was showed the process of forming different identities of female protagonist in a view of subject, the other characters and also narrator through the multi-identified female protagonist. In a rhetoric level, HaJinYangMoonRok was written with splendid expressions evoked some images like 'a woman in a man', and 'a man hided a woman' by mixed with masculine words and feminine ones. Finally such rhetorics showed a female character's dual sexualities; a man and also a woman by describing some honorable personalities, fascinating temperature, and marvelous abilities which were possessed from her young girlhood day as Ok-yoon. The characterization of Ms. Ha showed the self-composition process with a newly created female character who had multi-identities through adventurous literary imaginal stories in a contextual field of social conflicts around sexuality and gender. The readers were led to interesting thought; a respectful female life, a valuable meaning of feminity, and a way of self-initiative life.
