국문 초록

나는 <여영웅>을 중심으로 여장군소설들의 개화기적 변모 양상을 고찰하였다. 우선 인물과 사건 구성에 관심을 가졌다. 주인공은 천정배필과의 혼사를 거부하며 자신의 의지를 고수하는 변별적 특징을 보인다. 그에게는 지속적으로 운명결정론이 주입되지만, 결국 그의 자유의지가 그 강요를 이겨낸다. 그러나 이렇게 숙명론을 대체했던 인간의 자유의지도 다시 상황의 아이러니에 의해 대체되고 만다. 이것은 <여영웅>이 근대소설에 근접한다는 근거이다. 작가의 의도를 고찰하면서는 의식의 길항작용과 시대정신의 추이를 살펴보았다. 먼저 중국과 해외라는 공간의 대립구도에 주목하였는데, 중국은 폐쇄적이고 억압된 공간인 반면에 해외에서 찾은 미개의 섬은 개방적이고 자유로운 공간이었다. 주인공은 이 섬을 개명시켜서 단시간에 부국강병을 이룬 나라를 건설한다. 공간의 대립구도를 바탕으로 전개된 서사에는 물질적인 측면에서의 개화를 지향하는 작가의 의도가 투영되어 있다. 과거와 현재가 담지한 시간의식의 대립구도에도 주목하였다. 과거는 여성이 가정에 구속된 것을 운명으로 받아들인 시대였던 반면에, 현재는 여성도 남녀평등의 교육을 받고 스스로 운명을 개척할 수 있는 시대로 의미화된다. 시간의 대립구도를 바탕으로 전개된 서사에는 정신적인 측면에서의 개화를 지향하는 작가의 의도가 투영되어 있다. <여영웅>은 물질적ㆍ정신적 영역에서 균형적으로 개화를 이루어야 한다는 시대정신을 담은 소설이다.

영문 초록

I considered Yeo-yeong-ung(女英雄) published serially in the time of enlightenment in relation to differences with the female-general novels written in the Chosun Dynasty period. The heroin of Yeo-yeong-ung sticked to her opinion and refused the marriage to her providential spouse. In the course of this conflict, a lot of new events occurred in succession and new characters who forced the heroin to obey the power of destiny appeared. However she rid herself of fatalism and absolutely adhered to her own volition. Though her volition was followed firmly, it was substituted by the logic of reality, that is, the irony of circumstance in the latter part of the novel. I proposed that this powerful volition and a substitution for it were the signal that Yeo-yeong-ung had come to close the modern novel. In the latter half of this essay, I inquired into the antagonism of consciousness and the intention of the author on the basis of an analysis of narrative properties. Firstly, I observed that China as the narrative space presented a striking contrast to the Foreign. While China in the novel meant the closed and oppressed space, the uncivilized island(Salmaido) represented the opened and free space. The heroin enlightened the ignorant people and established the wealthy and powerful country in this island in a short period of time. I thought this way of narrative development caused to the intention of the author of aiming at the civilization of material aspect. Secondly, I investigated the contrast between the past and the present. While women in the past were not educated sufficiently and obeyed their unfortunate destiny, the modern women in the present should be equally educated and improve their lot by themselves. Actually in the novel, the well and equally educated heroin showed her great ability and built up her own civilized country. I thought this narrative development was originated from the consciousness of the author of aiming at the civilization of spiritual aspect. In conclusion, Yeo-yeong-ung was the novel that maintained the well-valanced civilization of both material and spiritual aspect.
