사화의 극복, 여성의 숨은 힘

국문 초록

이 논문은 조선시대에 일어난 사화 가운데 연루된 사람의 수가 가장 많았고 처벌의 수위도 높았던 신임사화를 배경으로, 멸문지화를 당한 집안을 수습하고 극복하기 위해 여성들이 어떠한 힘을 발휘했는지를 살펴보고자 작성되었다. 사화의 핵심적 인물이었던 노론 4대신-이이명, 이건명, 김창집, 조태채-집안의 여성들은 딸, 아내, 며느리, 어머니의 입장에서 자신들이 할 수 있는 일을 찾아 해내는 강인한 면을 보였다. 집안의 대를 잇기 위해 宗子를 피화시키고 거짓 장례 치르기, 사화에 연루된 아버지를 구명하기 위해 상언 올리기, 적몰된 집안의 생계를 잇기 위해 노동하기, 사화로 목숨을 잃은 시집 식구의 시신을 수습하고 상례 치르기, 정치적 입장이 다른 시집 식구를 원망하고 저주하다가 유배가기 등 여성들은 각기 방법은 다르지만 사화로 인한 집안의 위기를 극복하기 위해 자신의 역할을 수행하였다. 이들 여성을 기록한 남성 사대부들은 위급한 상황에서 순발력과 기지, 용기를 내어 일을 수습하고 사태를 마무리 한 여성들의 힘의 원천을 학식으로 규정함으로써 잠재력을 인정하였고, 이러한 학문의 과정과 습득에 관해 발화함으로써 여성들이 위기를 극복하는 과정에서 제 몫을 담당할 수 있었음을 서사적으로 입증하였다. 그리고 여성들이 보여준 행동과 힘을 개인적 차원의 성취에 국한하지 않고 사회적이고 정치적인 의미를 부여하였다. 사화를 극복한 여성들은 그들이 온축해두었던 "숨은 힘"을 발휘했지만 그러한 힘은 공식적으로 전해지고 보상받지 못했다는 점에서 오랜 시간 "숨은 힘"으로 묻혀 있을 수밖에 없었다. 본고는 사화를 극복하기 위해 중요한 역할을 했지만 그동안 주목받지 못했던 여성들의 숨은 힘을 찾아 의미를 부여하고자 하였다. 본고에서 다룬 여성들은 강한 외적 시련 앞에서 가장 강력한 방법과 수단을 동원해 맞섰다. 그들의 행위는 때론 도덕과 법에 저촉되기도 했는데 아무런 문제 제기 없이 서술자에 의해 이야기되고 미화되는 것은 서술자의 정치적 당파성에 기인한다. 여성에 관한 기록이 대체로 그러하듯이 서술자의 시각과 대상의 거리를 밝히는 정치한 작업이 요구되는데, 본고에서는 미처 그러한 부분까지 살피지는 못했다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to clarity the woman's power to overcome the disaster that wipes out a whole family. The woman's family met the calamity of literati in 1721(Sinim sahwa-신임사화) and there were many persons involved the calamity. So many members of the family were punished, too. The key figures of the calamity of literati were Lee Yimyeong, Lee Keonmyeong, Kim Changjib, Cho Taechae. They were called "the four great ministers of Noron(노론)". The woman of the great ministers of Noron did their important role as a daughter, a wife, a daughter- in- law and a mother. Some woman let the successor of the family escape and hold fake funeral. Some woman wrote a letter of plea to the king to save her father who was involved the calamity. Some woman labored for the dispossessed family to barely manage to feed themselves. Some woman took the body and had the funeral alone. The other woman cursed her husband's family who had differing political opinions and was banished. Though they used different methods, they took their roles to overcome the crisis of the home. The royal man who wrote these women approved their potential by defining their source of the power as a learning. The royal man thought that these women could amend the situation because they had intellectual qualities. They empowered social and political meaning to the woman. They didn't limit the woman's power and doing as a private level. Even though the woman exerted their "hidden power" to conquer hardships, they didn't get credit for their contributions. So, their services and power had to be hidden during a long time. I tried to add a new meaning to the neglected woman who took the important role to conquer the hardship. The woman who I concerned about in this study stood up to the external hardship by using every possible means and expedients. The woman sometimes committed immoral and illegal doing. However, the narrative wrote and praised their doing without doubt because they had political bias. I couldn't catch between the narrative's view and the woman's situation in the field of the political positions.
