영문 초록

Researches in oral literature have progressed a great deal for the past 30 years, but the fact that the feminist approach to the oral literature, which is the theoretical ground for this research is the subject of discussion provides a meaningful suggestion. This paper reviews the oral works of female transmitters, studies on female images, and the studies carried out from the feminist perspective. The oral literature was considered to be the source for the documentary literature for a long time. Even after it gained its recognition as an independent area of literature study the researchers of oral literature paid a great deal of attention to its inclusion in the mainstream literature and its place in the literature history. The research on women can be found in the discussions on female images in myths, Pansori, mask dances. The discussions on female images involve from the social formation of feminity from a traditional perspective to the interpretation of feministic symbols from the myth-ritual approach. The female characters are generally interpreted as symbols of productivity or the like. The studies on women transmitters and their works continue to be carried out since 1990's, but more serious studies on women are expected to appear in the area of folk songs that are more closely related to the lives of women in real world. The area we should pay more attention, however, is the continuous attempts to read women from a feminist perspective with the rise of consciousness on women's reality. This tendency is conspicuous especially in the studies on epic literature. In the oral literature research, attempts to read women in terms of cultural context are made by feminist researchers through the studies on myths, folk tales and folk songs. Researches on female behavior and female types are very frequently carried out in the area of folk tales which deal with the lives of women. For example, the study on the folk tale of "loyal wife", the first study of this kind, approaches to the woman's reality by relating to the social context from the perspective of existentialism. More studies on the folk tales are done with the application of western theories on feminism and semiotics. In spite of several attempts mentioned above, the oral literature research on female literature has just started. What we should do is to develop theories and accumulate data for feminist literature studies to fill the gap in the Korean literature history and research. The following are the suggestions to do this job; First, the study on the transmitter should be done to understand women as creaters and carriers of oral literature. The understanding on female transmitter is necessary to understand women of today who are the main consumer of culture. Second, the study on the characteristics of text should be done. The oral literature carry both the traditional values and the changed values with the time changes. Through the former, we can identify the archtype of feminiry and through the latter, we can approach to the mechanism of internalization of the value system by women. Thus, we should carefully examine both the social context and feminity. Third, the restoration of feministic reality and feminity should be achieved. The complexity and diversity of oral literature reflect its historical development, and women represent best for the characteristics of oral literature. Fourth, the grammar and discourse of feminist literature should be studied. The examination on text construction strategies in poetry making and storytelling and various usages including ways of speech is to identify characteristics of transmitted literature and women's speech. The results of the studies on the ways of women's speech and characteristics of female discourse in oral literature can provide reference points for modern literature study that express interests in woman' speech and writing.
