This article on the love between a man and a woman in oral Folktales starts out of ruriosity: The author was wondering what made that kind of love unable to be expressed actively, although it had been one of the most attractive motives in hterarure. Then, author chose the tales of love between Suh-hyun and Man-myung, the parents of You-shin Kim, and of love KimHyunGamHo in Sam-kuk yusa and Sam-kuk sagi as the models of true love in the Folktales. 1he author believe, love is finally completed when a man and a woman, of their own free will, earnestly and frankly love each other and sacrifice himself or herslf for other parry. However, the love stories in the Folktales, which have orally handed down to the present, had to undergo a few changes. The natural love stories have been regarded as the srories about virtuous woman and then handed down as such, for the chastity consciousness obscured them due to the code of chastity forced by he ethos of Chosun Period. We should consider it is not as the submission to the morality but as a consequence of the affection that a wife kills herself following afrer her husband's death or dies for her husband when neither was she forced to do so nor was she bounded by a code. The Sangsabam true and Woorunggaksi tale are the typical examples thar show us the most beautiful love stories, but as their foci are transferred to the motives of the metamorphosis and Kwantalminneo, their love is bleached. The commons who have playes an important role in oral Folktales, never hides the fact that the pleasure of love means amorous passion, and they shuffled through their stories mixing humorous expressions in their belief thar the essence of love lay in the moment of culmination, the moment the body and the mind combined together. Then, what prevented the love stories from flourishing by tradition? First, the love stories were probably dwindling away into nothing as rhe custom based on the moral code of Chu-tzu had spred throughout the Chosun society, for custom impelled men and women to keep away from each ocher. Confucianism ignored the hwnan emotions such as sentiment, love, or desire at all, and it never allowed the social intercourse with men and women expect that of a husband a wife. Secondly, it is related with the immediacy of the very spot where the Folktales are orally delivered. Folktale is a characteristic genre: a reciter should rel! a love story in front of the audience, and the very things works as an obstacle for love stories because we feel reluaanr co say chat kind of story openly. This is distinguished when it is compared with folk song. Folk song is a self-sufficient genre to sing one's love story for oneself. Thirdly, it is due to the attribute of love and psychology of lovers. When we fall in love with somebody, instead of boasting of our love, we are anxious to know the other party's feeling rather than our own love, and feel hurt when we think we love him or her more than he or she loves us. It is difficult for us to love maturely because of our self-centered, egoistic nature, and eventually this causes love stories to be hard to survive. Studying the world of love Folktales, it can be recognized the subject of mature Jove is a woman rather than a man. Therefore, the love stories come into full blossom at last when women step forward to the frontline of literature without remaining at the back of men as their useful tools-thar means when the novel is established as a genre.
