‘두 세 사람이 내 이름으로…’ (마18:20)에 나타난 교회론적 함의

국문 초록

전통적인 교회정치와 직분제도에 대한 도전과 자유교회적 관점, 곧 ‘우리가 교회다’라는 구호가 로마교와 감독제 교회들, 장로교를 비롯한 개신교 전반에 은연중에 퍼져나가고 있다. 우리는 이를 점증하는 ‘회중교회화’라고 할 수 있다. 마태복음 18:20은 이런 자유교회적 회중교회 전통이 매우 선호해 온 본문이다. 회중주의적 자유교회와 동시에 한국개신교의 70%를 차지하는 장로교회의 뿌리가 된 웨스트민스터 총회에서도 이 본문은 교회론 전반에 대한 논의의 중심이 되었다. 총회상에서 마태복음 18:20은 16:19과 18:18의 천국의 열쇠들, 그리고 16:18과 18:17의 έκκλησία, 권징과 교회적 회합들에 관련된 논의들과 깊은 관련속에서 이해되었다. 웨스트민스터 총회상의 다수였던 장로파는 천국의 열쇠들을 직분자들에게 주어진 것으로 보고자 했고 독립파는 직접적으로 직분자로 보는 것을 피하면서 교회와 함께 혹은 교회로 부터 직분자들에게 있다고 보고자 했다. έκκλησία에 대한 이해에서도 같은 양상으로 나타나는데 장로파들은 사실상 직분자로, 독립파는 구체적인 한 지역교회로 국한시키고자 했다. 결과적으로 ‘둘 혹은 셋(사람)이 내 이름위에 같이 회집한 곳’을 장로파는 ‘권징을 위한 교회 직분자들의 회합들’로, 독립파는 말씀의 전파와 성례가 실제로 시행되며 따라서 한 믿음을 가진 회중(coetus fidelium)으로서 이 믿음에 일치하는 권징이 이루어지는 회중(a particular congregation)으로 본다. 장로파가 마태복음 18:20과 또 이와 관련된 본문들(마16:18-19, 18:15-18)에서 노회와 총회 곧, 직분자들의 회합들을 우선적인 교회로 보는 장로교회 정치를 직접적으로 추론해 낸 것은 무리가 있어 보인다. 반면에, 독립파는 이 본문을 회중에 국한해서 해석함으로써 승천하신 그리스도의 권세가 말씀의 직분자들을 ‘통해서’실현되어서 회중들을 그리스도께 얽어매도록 해야 한다는 일종의 ‘위로부터의’관점을 소홀하게 만들 수 있다.

영문 초록

Traditional church government and offices are being challenged by a Freechurch perspective. A slogan, “we are the church,” is spreading in all churches including Roman Catholic, Protestant and even in presbyterian churches. Such phenomenon is steadily growing and “congregationalizing” churches. Matthew 18:20 is a favorite Scriptural passage congregational churches use to support their arguments. The same passage was the center of discussion in the Westminster Assembly-Korean presbyterian churches which make up more than 70% of Korean Protestant churches and liberal congregational churches find their roots in the Westminster Assembly. In the Assembly, Matthew 18:20 was understood in connection with the keys of heaven in Matthew 16:19 and 18:18, evkklhsi,a in Matthew 16:18 and 18:17, and with the discussions of church discipline and assemblies. Presbyterians which made up the majority of the Westminster Assembly perceived that the keys of heaven were given to church office-bearers but the independents understood church office-bearers were not direct recipients of the keys. Instead, the keys of heaven were given to church office-bearers through the church and with the church. Both sides held fast to their own interpretations of evkklhsi,a. The presbyterians interpreted evkklhsi,a as the church office-bearers and the independents limited it to a particular congregation. Resultingly, for the presbyterians, “where two or three are gathered in my name” was understood as “gathering of church officebearers for church discipline.” But the independents perceived it as a particular congregation (coetus fidelium) where the gospel is preached and church discipline is faithfully exercised. It seems that making an argument for presbyterian church government from Matthew 18:20 and other related passages (Matt. 16:18-19, 18:15-18), perceiving the gathering of church officebearers such as presbytery and general assembly as the church, is a bit forced. On the other hand, by limiting the interpretation to a congregation, independents can be neglectful of the view that the authority of Christ who is ascended can be realized “through” the church office-bearers binding the congregation to Christ.
