국문 초록

우리가 직면하고 있는 현대문화가 지닌 참된 모습이 무엇인지를 정밀하게 관찰하고 분석해야 한다. 그리고 우리가 접하고 있는 문화 안에 잘못된 요소가 있다면 가장 먼저 바로 잡는 데 앞장서야 할 것이다. 그렇지 않으면 그로 인하여 전체가 파멸되는 불행을 겪게 될 것이기 때문이다. 세계 도처에서 새롭게 형성된 현대문화는 전통문화를 질식시키고 있다. 물질문화가 정신문화를 위협하고 있으며 물질적 가치가 정신적 가치보다 우위를 점하고 있다. 현대문화가 겪고 있는 이 같은 문제점 해결을 위해서 토마스 아퀴나스의 문화철학은 탁월한 자기 역할을 할 것이다. 토마스의 문화철학은 고대 문화에 대한 교부들의 편파적인 이해 앞에서 하나의 통일되고 종합적이고 잘 체계화된 구조를 제공하였다. 그래서 하나의 문화에 대한 <<증명>>, 다시 말해 <<논리적인 명백함>>을 제공하였다고 볼 수 있는 것이다. 토마스의 문화철학은 유한한 현상에 머무는 것이 아니라 무한하고 절대적인 가치추구를 그 중심부에 두고 있는 것이다. 따라서 토마스 아퀴나스가 문화의 토대로 제시한 근거가 무엇인지 살펴봄은 매우 뜻깊고 중요한 일이다. 문화에 대한 토마스 철학의 세 가지 기초는 형이상학적, 심리학적, 윤리적 기초이다. 토마스 아퀴나스는 문화에 대한 형이상학적 기초를 형성하는 데에 결정적인 역할을 하였다. 그는 아리스토텔레스의 형이상학을 다시 검토하고 깊이 연구하였다. 초감각적인 것에 관하여 다루는 아리스토텔레스의 형이상학을 토마스는 초자연적인 것을 다루는 사변적 신학의 단단한 기초로 삼았던 것이다. 토마스 아퀴나스의 문화철학을 연구함에 있어 두 번째 기초로 살펴보아야 할 것이 심리학적 기초이다. 아리스토텔레스의 철학을 인식하고 있었던 토마스는 다음으로 그의 심리학을 다시 심층적으로 연구하였고 그것을 세상에 소개하였다. 그리고 그는 그것을 자신의 학문 활동의 자유로운 모델로 삼았다. 아리스토텔레스의 심리학은 토마스 아퀴나스의 문화철학 형성에 결정적인 역할을 하였다. 무엇보다도 먼저, 토마스는 영혼에 대한 정의에 있어서 영혼은 '세상에서의 생활을 가능하게 하는 자연적인 육체의 현실태(l'entelechia)'라고 하는 아리스토텔레스의 영혼에 대한 정의를 따른다. 끝으로 윤리적인 기초도 종교적인 기초와 더불어 토마스 아퀴나스의 문화철학 형성에 중대한 기준이 되었음을 알 수 있다. 우리가 문화의 윤리ㆍ종교적 가치와 사회적인 가치 위에서 부분적인 것을 넘어서는 전체적인 것을 깨달아야 한다는 것은 바로 거기에 문화 형성을 위한 핵심적인 방향과 전체적인 기초가 있음을 의미하는 것이다. 토마스의 윤리학은 역사적인 측면뿐만 아니라 모든 측면에서 특별한 의미를 내포하는 것이었다. 토마스의 동시대인들도 그의 윤리학이 더 중요한 작품임을 강조하였다. 토마스 아퀴나스의 문화철학은 세속적인 어떤 한 학문 분야의 연구의 결과가 아니라 형이상학적 가치, 종교적 가치, 윤리적 가치, 사회적 가치, 마침내는 문화의 미적 가치까지 종합하여 그 가치들 위에 세운 완전하고 명백한 토마스 아퀴나스의 사상의 총체라고 보아야 한다. 따라서 그의 문화철학은 지상 세계에서 연구 발전되는 학문의 최고치라고 할 수 있는 것이다. 물론 이런 토마스 아퀴나스의 문화철학은 후대에 커다란 영향을 미쳤을 뿐 아니라 특히 인문주의의 근ㆍ현대문화에 얼마나 중요한 역할을 하는가! 감히 생각해보지 않을 수 없다. 비록 현대의 물질화된 문화 속에서 편중된 가치가 주장되고 있기는 하지만 그래도 역사가 계속되는 한 토마스 아퀴나스의 문화철학의 가치는 결코 줄어들지 않을 것이다.

영문 초록

It is required to examine and analyze in detail the reality of modern culture which we are facing now. If there are wrong factors, should not hesitate to correct them. Otherwise we face the misfortune of whole destruction followed. All over the world, the newly composed modern culture suffocate the traditional culture. Material culture threatens mental culture; material value dominates over mental value. Culture philosophy of Thomas Aquinas will play outstanding role to solve such problems. His culture philosophy provided united, comprehensive, organized structure against Church Doctors' biased understanding to ancient culture. It can be said that he provided , in other words to one culture. His culture philosophy didn't remain in limited phenomena but focused on pursuit of infinite absolute value. To examine his ground of culture is meaningful and important. 3 main grounds are metaphysical, psychological and ethical foundation. Aquinas played decisive role to form metaphysical foundation to culture. He reviewed and researched deeply Aristotle's metaphysics. Aristotle dealt with supernatural things; Aquinas used this speculative theology dealing with super naturalness as to his concrete foundation. Secondly, psychological foundation; Aquinas recognized Aristotle's philosophy; he made a profound study then introduced it to the world. And he made it as his free model in his scholarly activities. Aristotle's psychology played decisive role to form Aquinas' culture philosophy. Above all, Aquinas' definition to should, he followed Aristotle's definition that is 'soul is natural body reality (l'entelechia)' which makes earthly life possible. Finally, ethical foundation with religious basis is also an important foundation for Aquinas' culture philosophy. When we are to realize whole part not partial beyond over ethical, religious, social value of culture, it means that there are core direction and entire foundation in it for culture formation. Aquinas' ethics not only historical aspect but all aspects imply special meaning. Aquinas contemporaries emphasized his ethical works are more important pieces than others. Aquinas' culture philosophy is not just a scholarly result of a certain field. It is his perfect whole idea on the ground of metaphysical value, religious value, ethical value, social value and even esthetic value. So his culture philosophy can be placed on top of all scholarly works on earth. His culture philosophy made great influence on later generations, especially on modern culture of humanism. Although preponderate value is persisted in modern materialized culture, but the value of Aquinas culture philosophy won't be reduced and will remain in history.
