한국 노년학 연구에 대한 비판적 고찰

국문 초록

서구의 노년학 연구에 대한 비판적 연구는 수많은 노년학 관련 연구들이 경험적 자료를 분석하는 것에는 집중하는 반면 이를 이론과 통합하려는 노력이 부재하다는 점을 지적하고 있다. 본 연구는 이론의 부재라는 이러한 비판에 주목하여 사회노년학의 이론을 유형화를 중심으로 검토한 후 한국에서의 노년학 연구를 그 이론적 측면에서 분석하는 것이 목적이다. 서구 노년학 이론의 발전과정을 검토한 결과 본 연구는 다음과 같은 특징을 발견할 수 있었다. 첫째, 사회노년학 이론은 인근 사회과학으로부터 많은 영향을 받았다. 둘째, 이론의 유형이 미시-거시의 이론적 수준이나 방법론에 있어서 매우 다양하다. 셋째, 사회노년학 이론은 그 사회의 현실적 변화에 따라 새로운 이론을 만들어 왔다. 넷째, 다양한 이론의 발전에도 불구하고 다수의 연구는 이론적 관점이 부재하다. 한국의 노년학 연구를 이론적 관점을 중심으로 검토한 결과 서구에서의 노년학 연구와 마찬가지로 이론적 관점으로부터 출발한 연구가 매우 적다는 점, 이론에 기반 한 연구의 경우도 관점이 몇 가지 특정 이론에 집중되어 있다는 점, 최근의 이론적 관점에 대한 관심이 부재하다는 점 등을 발견할 수 있었다. 이론은 경험적 연구를 체계적인 지식으로 묶어 줌으로써 연구자로 하여금 대상에 대한 새로운 이해와 설명을 가능하게 한다. 이러한 측면에서 한국의 노년학 연구도 서구 이론의 토착화와 한국적 이론의 개발에 관심을 기울일 필요가 있다고 판단된다.

영문 초록

Through the theory connecting various empirical findings in systematic manner, we can understand and explain the facts. However, the critical reviews of studies on social gerontology insisted that there were short of efforts to integrate empirical findings with theories. Based on these critics, the authors tried to review the typology of theories in social gerontology and to analyze critically the theoretical perspectives in gerontological studies in South Korea. According to the analysis, There are four characteristics in theory development in gerontology in Western society. First, the gerontological theories have been affected by social theories. Second, there are a lot of varieties in perspectives and levels of analysis in gerontological theories. Third, the theories try to reflect the changes in society. Forth, the studies based on theories are very rare. According to the analysis of gerontological studies in South Korea, There are three characteristics in gerontological studies. First, studies based on theory are very rare. Second, even in studies based on theory, small numbers of theoretical perspectives are dominated. Third, there are short of concerns on theory development. Thus, the gerontological studies in South Korea are in need of the concern on localization of western theories and development of theories based on empirical findings in South Korea.
