In this article, my task is to find out how Paul as the apostle of/for/to the Gentiles thought the restoration of Israel. Actually my question is whether or not Paul really thought that Jews was out of his field. However, what we must remind that Paul was a Jew. So Paul opened his mind in Rom. 11. Many scholars are of opinion that all Israel would be saved completely in the future according to the Jewish eschatology. There are many patterns of Jewish universalism (the nations would be included into God's people) in the 1st century A.D. The tradition of eschatological pilgrimage, one of the patterns, shows the order of God's redemptive plan: all Israel will be saved and then the Gentiles will be saved(Isa. 2:2~4; Mic. 4:1~4). So the tradition reflects the fact that all Israel would be saved completely in the future. However, the problem is the order of God's redemptive plan. Rom. 11 presents the order of God's redemptive plan as follows: Israel's rejection of the gospel ⇒ Gentiles' acceptance of the gospel ⇒ The salvation of all Israel. So some scholars present this order to as "an ingenious revision" of God's original redemptive plan. So they insist that Paul has reversed the more typically Jewish expectation. To my opinion, the tradition of eschatological pilgrimage emphasizes not on the way how the nations would be included into God's people, but on the thought that the nations would be included into God's people. Furthermore, Rom. 11 does not presents the order of God's redemptive plan. That is why Paul has not reversed the order. Rom. 11 really present the way how God's redemptive plan will be progressed, and how the entire world(all Israel and the Gentiles) will be saved. Paul is still waiting for the consummation of the salvation of all Israel and the Gentiles. Paul suggests the way how Israel will be saved in Rom. 11, and says that the way is to preach the gospel to the Gentiles for the salvation of Israel. That is why we can regard Paul both as the apostle of Gentile and as that of Jews?
