원효의 『이장의』 성립 배경에 대한 일 고찰

국문 초록

본 논문은 원효의 『이장의』가 성립한 배경을 고찰한 것이다. 첫째는 소지장의 문제인데, 이것은 제7말나식과 관련이 있다. 7말나식의 개념이 구체화되면서 유가행파 안에 번뇌설 중 소지장에 대한 개념이 발생하고, 그것을 계기로 번뇌설은 번뇌장과 소지장의 二障說로 정리되게 된다. 곧 제7말나식의 개념이 명료해지지 않으면 소지장의 개념 역시 불명료하다고 말할 수 있다. 『이장의』의 경우 제7말나식과 소지장에 대한 개념이 구체적이고 명료한데, 이것은 현장이 번역한 신유식 계통의 경론으로부터 영향을 받은 것으로 생각된다. 이것은 원효가 『이장의』에서 제8식을 妄識으로 간주하는 듯한 태도와도 관련이 있는 것으로 생각된다. 둘째는 은밀문에 대해서인데, 혜원은 이장설을 정리함에 있어서 제7말나식을 전혀 고려하고 있지 않지만, 원효는 은밀문 역시 현료문과 마찬가지로 제7말나식 및 妄으로서의 第八阿梨耶識을 고려하여 二碍說을 정리하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째는 이장설의 구조에 대해서인데, 혜원이 이장설을 3중의 중층적 구조로 조직하는 형태와 원효가 은밀문과 현료문을 조직하는 기본 구조는 둘 다 『승만경』을 바탕으로 하고, 원효가 다시 이것을 혜원의 기본적 개념에 따라 隱現으로 배대하는 것으로 생각된다. 따라서 원효의 『이장의』는 전체적인 조직 구조는 혜원의 『대승의장』 『이장의』의 영향을 받은 것이며, 『이장의』 내의 은밀문과 현료문에서 설하는 각각의 識說과 所知障 및 智碍는 오히려 신유식 계통의 영향을 받아서 성립된 것이라고 결론을 내릴 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper is a study on the background of formation of Wonhyo(元曉)'s Ijangeui(二障義, Meaning of Two Hindrances) from three aspects as follows. The first is the aspect of the Cognitive Hindrances(所知障) which are concerned with the Seventh Consciousness of Manas(第七末那識). Shaping of the Consciousness of Manas generated the concept of the Cognitive Hindrances in the teaching of afflictions of the Yogacara School, and, in the end, the school classified afflictions or hindrances as two hindrances of the Afflictive Hindrances(煩惱障) and the Cognitive Hindrances. Were it not for clear concept of the Seventh Consciousness of Manas, that is to say, there could be clear concept of the Cognitive Hindrances. In the Ijangeui, the Seventh Consciousness of Manas and the Cognitive Hindrances are explained clearly and concretely, which seems to be affected by the Newly Yogacara School texts translated by Xuanzang(玄奘), and, also, to be related to the way Wonhyo took the Eighth Consciousness as the deluded. The second is the Gate of the Hidden(隱密門). Huiyuan(慧遠) explains the theory of two hindrances regardless of the Seventh Consciousness whereas Wonhyo does with consideration for the Seventh and the deluded Eighth Consciousness in the Gate of the Hidden as well as in the Gate of the Disclosed(顯了門). The last is the structure of the theory of two hindrances. Huiyuan's theory has the triple structure on the basis of the Shengman-jing(勝鬘經, Srimaladevi sutra). Wonhyo, also on the basis of the same sutra, organizes the Gate of the Hidden and the Gate of the Disclosed according to Huiyan's basic structure. To conclude, the organizational structure of the Ijangeui written by Wonhyo is affected from the Chapter of 'Meaning of Two Hindrances(二障義)' in the Dashengyizhang(大乘義章, Script on the Meaning of Great Vehicles) written by Huiyan, and his respective explanations on the Consciousness and the Cognitive Hindrances in the Gate of the Hidden and the Gate of the Disclosed, are influenced by the Newly Yogacara School.
