뇌과학적 관점에서 본 민주시민교육

국문 초록

한국 사회에서 학교폭력 문제가 심각한 사회문제로 대두되면서 이를 해결하기 위한 다양한 대책이 발표, 시행되고 있다. 특히 학교폭력 문제 해결을 위해 제도적 개선과 각계각층이 유기적인 협력을 구축하고 노력하고 있는 점은 주목할 만하다. 그러나 학교교육의 핵심인 교과수업에 대한 고민은 상대적으로 취약해 보인다. 따라서 이 연구는 교과교육 차원에서 민주시민 양성을 주요 목표를 설정하고 있는 사회과 교육의 역할에 주목하고 있다. 특히 이 연구는 학교폭력 등의 문제를 예방하기 위한 민주시민교육의 역할과 관련하여 감정과 이성의 통합이라는 전제하에 공감 등의 정의적 측면을 강조하는 뇌과학적 입장에서 현행 사회과 민주시민교육의 개선 방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 첫째, 우선 민주시민교육과 관련하여 중요한 의미를 갖는 뇌과학의 주요 내용을 살펴보고, 둘째, 이를 통해 현행 사회과 민주시민교육의 주요 특징들을 분석ㆍ평가하고자 한다. 셋째, 문제가 되고 있는 학교폭력 등의 비민주적 행태를 해결하기 위한 사회과 민주시민 교육의 개선 방향으로 감정과 이성의 통합, 비민주적 문제의 해결 능력 신장, 공감능력 신장을 위한 다양한 방법 등을 제시하였다. 아울러 융합교육, 즉 도덕과, 예체능 교과와의 융합이 중요함을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

School violence has become a serious problem recently in Korea. Therefore, our government has promoted various policies to combat this. It is especially notable that remarkable that these policies emphasis the institutional improvement and cooperation among different sectors of the society. However, these approaches are not much focused on the importance of regular school classes to prevent violence at school. Thus, this paper proposes improvements from the brain science perspective which emphasizes the affective aspects, such as emotion, empathy, and the integration between emotion and reason. To achieve this objective, this paper first examines closely the main contents of brain science that has an important meaning for democratic citizenship education. Second, this study analyze democratic citizenship education in social studies from the brain science perspective. Third, it proposes improvements in democratic citizenship education in social studies, such as the integration between emotion and reason, the cultivation of undemocratic problem-solving abilities, abilities to empathize with their fellows. Finally, this study suggests a convergence of education, the moral education, art and physical education.
