아버지의 양육 참여에 내재한 젠더 위계와 '신 도구적' 부성의 구성

국문 초록

이 연구는 최근 우리 사회에서 자녀 양육에 참여하는 아버지들에 대한 관심이 증가하는 경향에 주목하여, 부양자 지위를 둘러싼 경제적, 사회문화적 조건 변화 속에서 자녀를 돌보는 아버지들이 만들어내는 부성의 특성을 파악하고 젠더 관계 변화에 어떤 함의를 가지는지 이해하려는 목적을 가진다. 이에 초등학생 이하의 자녀를 둔 맞벌이 아버지들을 심층면접하여 자녀를 돌보게 되는 맥락을 이해하고 부모 역할에서의 젠더 위계가 어떻게 구성, 변형되는지 살펴보았다. 자녀 양육에 참여하는 아버지들은 친밀성에 대한 기대와 양육에 참여해야 하는 현실적 조건을 바탕으로 자신의 양육 경험에 의미를 부여하고 있었다. 주도적으로 자녀 양육에 참여하는 아버지들은 권위주의적 부성을 거부하고 젠더 체계에 갇혀있지 않으려는 경향을 보여준 반면, 부모의 역할을 분리하고 상대적으로 양육에 소극적으로 참여하는 아버지들은 관념적으로 평등한 관계를 지향하면서도 계층 유지와 자아실현이라는 삶의 두 목표 사이에서 '좋은 아버지'로 불리는 효과를 누리고 있었다. 양육 참여에 관한 적극성 정도에 따라 아버지들의 돌봄 경험은 다르게 의미화되지만, 친밀성을 중시하면서도 구조적 불평등에 대해 개인적으로 대응하는 차원에 머문다는 점, 그리고 불평등한 돌봄 자원을 남성 중심적으로 활용한다는 점에서 도구적 특성을 가진다고 규정했다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 오늘날 자녀 양육에 참여하는 아버지들이 구성하는 부성, 즉 생계부양자 역할로부터 자유롭지 않으며 '남성'이라는 젠더 지위를 기반으로 '돌보는 아버지'가 되어가는 과정을 '신 도구적' 부성으로 명명하였다. 그리고 젠더 불평등의 문제에 적극 개입하기 위해서는 '돌봄' 참여가 여성과 남성 모두의 보편적 경험이 될 수 있도록 하는 인식의 전환이 필요하며, '돌보는 아버지'로서의 삶을 새로운 보편으로 전제하는 가운데 사회적 지원체계가 마련되어야함을 주장하였다.

영문 초록

Nowadays there are lots of attention to fathers who care for the children in Korea society. This study attempts to analyse the meanings of fathers' care involvement in response to the changes of economic and sociocultural conditions of breadwinner role, and to investigate the implications of fathers' care involvement with regard to the transformation of gender relations. In-depth interviews are done targeting for men who have children aged 12 and under in dual-earner families. Fathers' care involvement is expected to construct and transform the gender hierarchy in parental role. Fathers emphasize on their experience of care based on the expectation for intimacy and the practical condition to involve the care. Fathers who involve the care actively tend to deny the authoritarian fatherhood and free from the unequal gender system related to care, while fathers who care for the children passively and assert the equal relationship ideally tend to achieve the honour to be called 'good father' clinging to two goals which are the maintenance of social status and the self realization. Fathers who care for their children show the instrumental character of fatherhood in the way that they cope with the structural inequality individually even though they regard intimacy as important and that they use the unequal care resources androcentrically. In conclusion, current fatherhood shows the feature that fathers' tendency to cling to the breadwinner role as well as involve the childcare and become a 'caring father' based on the gender hierarchy, and this sort of fatherhood is named as neo-instrumental fatherhood. To intervene the problem of gender inequality in caring, it is necessary not only to transform the recognition for making care-involvement universal experience for women and men, but also to arrange the social support system for parents with a new universal of caring father.
