국문 초록

이 논문에서는 언더우드의 선교적 삶의 한 축으로서의 교육사업활동에서 드러난 교육정신의 실체와 그 교육정신이 연세교육 및 한국교육에서 지니는 정신사적 의미를 고찰했다. 이를 통해 교육적 격동의 현 상황에서 연세교육이 나아가야 할 방향을 찾아보고자 했다. 언더우드 및 언더우드 가문의 교육정신의 특징은, 기독교적 사해동포주의와 민족주의에 근간을 두고서, 인류 역사 경험 중에서 가장 좋은 것과 동시에 한국적인 것을 아울러 교육내용으로 삼아 개방적이고 봉사적인 인재를 양성하는 교육을 지향했다는 점이다. 이 교육정신을 거울삼아서, 과연 오늘날 연세교육이 이 시대에 필요한 민족주의와 참된 기독교정신을 구현하고 있는지, 최고수준의 교육실천을 이루어내고 있는지를 반성할 필요가 있다. 연세교육이 가장 연세다운 교육이 되려면 언더우드의 교육정신에 근거한 국학과 인문학 전통의 회복이 절실하다.

영문 초록

This article is to explore the spirit and the meaning of educational thought revealed through the educational and missionary life of Horace Grant Underwood in modern history of Korea. In addition, this article aims at identification of the vision and goal of education that Yonsei University should currently seek. It has been the characteristic of educational spirit of the Underwood family to educate christian leaders who have open mind and devoted spirit based on cosmopolitanism and nationalism. In order to raise such leaders, the Underwood family has stressed on building the curriculum chosen from the best of human experiences and unique Korean culture. From the view point of the educational spirit of the Underwood family, it is strongly recommended to examine whether Yonsei University has actualized the nationalism and christianity needed in korean society of 21st century, and whether Yonsei University has maximized the quality of education. For Yonsei University to be on the right track in this global era, it is emphasized that the prestigious tradition of liberal arts and Korean Studies based on the Underwood's educational thought should be revitalized on Yonsei campus.
