국문 초록

본고에서는, "불교와 다른 종교와의 관계에 대해서, 원효는 어떠한 입장에 있는가?"에 대해서 검토하고 있다. 원효의 화쟁론에 입각한 그의 견해는 대체로 다음의 3가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 원효는 '불교와 다른 종교는 궁극적으로 같다'고 한다. 『법화종요』에서 말하기를, 비록 여래가 여러 중생을 교화하기 위해서 이러저러한 방편으로 다양한 가르침의 모습을 나타내고 있기는 하지만, '불교와 다른 종교는 근본적으로 서로 같다'고 한다. 둘째, 원효는 '불교와 다른 종교는 서로 다르다'고 한다. 『대혜도경종요』에서 불교의 가르침과 유교의 가르침은 서로 그 성격이 다르다고 말하였는데, 이것은 석가모니부처님께서 당시 외도들에게 하였던 말씀과 유사한 점을 갖는다. 셋째, 원효는 위와 같은 상반된 견해에 대해서, '궁극적으로는 앞의 견해가 맞고, 현실적으로는 뒤의 견해가 맞다'고 하여 양쪽의 입장을 화해하였다. 여기에서, 그는 '궁극적'과 '현실적'이라는 '복수의 기준[二門]'이라는 방법을 사용하였는데, 이러한 기준들은 『대승기신론』에서 말하는 '일심(一心)과 이문(二門)의 관계'를 염두에 두고 여기에 원용한 것으로 추정된다.

영문 초록

On this paper, you can hear the opinions on 'the relationship between Buddhism and other religions' which were submitted by Wonhyo who may be the representative of Korean Buddhism. If we summarize his attitudes on this issue, they are in this way. Firstly, Buddhism and other religions are same. In the Essentials of the Lotus Sutra, he suggested that in order to save the sentient beings, Buddhas produced many kinds of teachings in the world. And then, he concluded that the teachings of Buddhism are fundamentally same to the teachings of other religions. Secondly, Buddhism and other religions are different. In the Essentials of the Great Sutra on Perfection of Wisdom, he pointed to the fact that characteristics of Buddhism are different from the characteristics of Confucianism. Then, his opinion is very similar to the Sakya-muni Buddha's teaching which was said to the followers of other religions in those days. Finally, he harmonized the above two opposed assertions, saying that the former opinion is right at the aspect of nature and the latter opinion is right at the aspect of phenomenon. Here, he used 'The Harmonizing Method of Two Standards' which have 'at the aspect of nature' and 'at the aspect of phenomenon' in this case. And it is inferred that those two standards are from the relationship between the one mind and the two aspects in the Treatise on the Awakening of Mahayana Faith.
