현대 미술 속 체모(體毛) 의미 연구

국문 초록

현대미술은 개념과 물성의 다양성으로 특징지어질 수 있는 바, 20세기 초부터 미술에서 개념의 탈바꿈은 물성(Material)을 폭넓게 수용하면서 사용되는 재료의 영역을 확장시켜 왔다. 20세기 초에 전개된 아방가르드 예술운동은 회화나 조각에 쓰이던 기존 매체의 범주를 넘어 예술을 삶의 영역 속으로 끌어들이고자 했고, 이러한 이유 때문에 인간의 몸 자제가 예술의 새로운 재료이자 동시에 장소로 등장하게 되었다. 신체미술의 연장선상에서 절단된 신체로서의 머리카락, 혹은 인간의 체모는 다양한 개념을 투영하며 텍스트를 함축한 재료로서 현대 섬유미술 작업에서 폭넓게 나타난다. 본 연구는 복잡한 현대 섬유미술 작품들의 의미를 이해하고 관객과 작가 사이에서 올바른 소통을 돕고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 국내외 전문서적, 학술 논문 자료와 인터넷 분석을 통해 머리카락의 의미와 역사, 문화적, 이론적 배경을 연구하고, 또한 머리카락으로 작업한 작가들의 작업을 발췌해 의미론적 부분들의 구체적 사례들을 조사한다. 본 연구는 대략 초현실주의에서 최근 미술에 이르기까지의 작품들에 나타난 인간의 체모의 의미를 다루고 활용한 대표적 사례들을 다루며, 연구 내용은 체모가 섬유미술 작품들 안에서 개념과 정신을 담고 있다는 의미론적 연구에 초점을 맞춘다. 또한 털의 ‘반-시지각적(Anti-optical)’인 사물적 특성과 연관하여 체모의 ‘낯설음(Uncanny)’, ‘기괴함(Weirdness)’에 대해 연구하였다. 연구 결과, 체모는 성과 인종을 포함한 개인과 집단의 정체성을 드러내주는 지표로서의 의미를 가지며 탈신체화된 신체로서의 불안정한 인간에 대한 메타포를 내포함을 알 수 있다. 결론적으로 체모는 양극적 가치의 혼재를 담음으로서 많은 다양한 의미를 담는 매력적인 현대 미술의 재료로서 미술에 나타남을 이 연구를 통해 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

The most important feature of the concept of contemporary art is a variety of concepts and materials. Since the early 20th century, transformation of the concept in art has extended its area of media while accommodating materials widely For example, the avant-garde art movement in the early 20th century focused on destroying traditional categories such as painting and sculpture and bringing art into the real life and for this reason, the human body came to emerge as a new media of art and place. In the extension of body art, as an amputated body, body hair is being shown widely in contemporary fiber art as a media projecting various concepts and implying texts. The purpose of this study is understanding the meanings of complex modern fiber art work and helping communication between the artists and audiences. Through the analysis of domestic and foreign books, academic papers and internet, this study examines the meanings and history of hairs, cultural and theoretical backgrounds and selects some artists who worked with hairs and examines specific cases of semantic task. This study covers the representative examples which deal with the meanings of human hairs from approximately surrealism to recent art and focuses on semantic research that the hair contains concepts and spirits in fiber art works. It also covers 'uncanny', 'weirdness' of hair associated with hair's anti-optical characteristic. As a result, hair is a meaningful indicator revealing identity of individuals and groups including gender and ethnicity and ambivalent characteristics and also implies metaphor for unstable human as desomatized body, Consequently, through this study, it's found that hair serves as an attractive material in modern art holding a variety of meanings by holding the mixture of ambivalent values.
