국문 초록

본 논문은 라이트(Wright)의 연극 『나는 나의 아내다』(이하 『아내』)의 희곡 텍스트와 2013년 한국 공연을 면밀하게 분석한다. 본고는 희곡과 공연을 넘나들며 『아내』의 주제 의식을 세밀하게 독해하고, 한국 공연에서의 문화번역과 무대화(staging)를 고찰한다. 라이트는 '큐레이팅'이라는 개념을 차용하면서, 역사 기술과 재현의 구성성을 복장전환 1인 다역 연기와 교차시킨다. 특별히, 한국 공연에서 액자형의 무대는 구성된 역사로써 샤로테의 생애사를 담아내는 효과적인 장치로 기능한다. 또한 『아내』는 샤로테의 물건 수집을 퀴어적인 역사 만들기/기록과 연계시킨다. 억압과 폭력의 시대에 파괴되는 문화유산과 벼려지는 물건들은 샤로테의 퀴어 실존과 동일시된다. 그러나 라이트는 나치와 사회주의 치하에서 샤로테의 생존과 통독 이후 그녀를 둘러싼 사회적 논란을 강조함으로써 샤로테의 퀴어 젠더와 섹슈얼리티를 상대적으로 희석시키고 후경화한다. 즉, 암울한 시기를 통과했던 한 '인간'에 대한 복합적인 이해 속에서, 샤로테의 국가적 정치상황과 민족성이 퀴어 정체성을 압도하는 측면이 있다. 샤로테에 대한 불신과 논란을 상쇄하기 위한 의도에 의해 오히려 그녀의 퀴어성이 전면적으로 부각되지 못한다. 한국 공연에서는 번역의 오류와 퀴어 가독성(readability)에 대한 고려가 가중되면서 이러한 경향이 더욱 심화되었다. 중요한 퀴어 장면들이 공연에서 삭제됨에 따라, 동독의 게이 복장전환자에 대한 특수한 맥락들이 충분히 재현되고 전달되지 못하는 한계가 있다.

영문 초록

This article critically analyzes Doug Wright's I Am My Own Wife (Wife, 2003) and its 2013 Korean Production. Wife portrays the singular life of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, an East-German gay transvestite who survived both the Nazi and the Communist regimes. Wife underscores the multiplicity of truth and sheds light on the multi-vocality of history through Charlotte's life. In this respect, the picture frame-like stage of the Korean production effectively materializes the playwright's intention. Also, Wright foregrounds the constructedness of identity and history by means of a one-person transvestite theatre. Wife links Charlotte's collecting antiques and preserving obsolete things to history-recording. During the periods of deconstruction and violence, it seems that Charlotte identified herself with a disappearing cultural heritage and abandoned objects. As a sexual "abject," she had to prove her queer existence by collecting. However, Wife overshadows and backgrounds Charlotte's queerness by over-emphasizing her survival under political oppression and controversy regarding Stasi file. That is, her national identity tops her queer identity. Ironically, to assure Charlotte's credibility and verisimilitude, Wright sacrifices her queerness. Due to the mistranslation of queer terms and the omission of a few important queer scenes, the specific German queer contexts in Wife are not conveyed appropriately and sufficiently in the Korean production.
