국문 초록

한국전쟁기에 씌어진 이무영의 『사랑의 화첩』(1952)과 정비석의 『애정무한』(1951)은 전쟁이 창출한 국민국가-남한의 윤리 의식과 감정 구조를 파악하는 데 유효한 텍스트이다. 『사랑의 화첩』은 타락한 반민족주의자로 지목된 여성을 통해 전쟁기의 젠더화된 인식 체계를 재현한다. 가톨릭 사제와 수녀의 길을 걷고 있던 한 남녀는 사랑에 빠져 세속의 삶으로 돌아온다. 남편은 국가라는 이름의 신을 새로이 맞이하여 전재민 구호사업에 투신하며, 이와 같은 민족적 대의 앞에서 아내의 개인적 욕망은 부정되고 처단되어야 할 것으로 그려진다. 그러나 아내가 처절하게 전락하게 되는 결정적 이유는 그의 섹슈얼리티가 공산주의자를 향해 발현되었기 때문이다. 아내는 월북 후에야 북한이 지상의 지옥이라는 깨닫게 되는 한편, 중요한 것은 육체가 아니라 정신에 있다는 것을 인식하게 된다. 그러나 뒤늦은 반성은 그를 성적, 이념적 타락이라는 혐의에서 구해내지 못한다. 다시금 조우한 남편이 죽기 직전에 내뱉는 "추한 계집"이라는 말은 이 소설의 주제이자 아내의 고백에 대한 최종 선고라 할 수 있다. 반면 『애정무한』에서 여성의 섹슈얼리티는 긍정되는 것처럼 보인다. 신분을 위장하고 북측 선전실에서 근무하는 주인공은 동료 여성에게 애정을 느끼지만 갈등한다. 결코 공산주의자를 사랑할 수 없다는 것이 그 이유이다. 따라서 여성은 자신이 공산주의자가 아니라는 사실을 증명한 후 남성과의 정신적, 육체적 결합을 주도한다. 그러나 이는 주체적인 것이 아니라 남성이 욕망하는 대로 움직이는 것에 불과하다. 이 소설에서 그려지는 사랑은 전쟁이라는 폭력적 현실 속에서 자기분열과 실존적 상실을 경험하고 있는 남성적 자아의 판타지에 불과하다. 그는 자신의 환멸을 이상화된 여성을 통해 위안 받고 해소하고자 하며, 여성이 죽음을 맞이한 이후에는 낭만적인 노스탤지어를 통해 영원한 사랑을 기약한다. 이는 역사의 주인공에게만 허용되는 감정적 특권이다. 이처럼 두 소설은 각각 타락한 여성과 이상화된 여성이라는 타자를 매개로 남성-반공주의자의 주체성을 완성하고 있다는 점에서 공통된 특징을 지닌다.

영문 초록

As full-length novels written during the Korean War, Sa-rang-eui-haw-cheop(1952) by Lee, Moo-Young and Ae-jeong-moo-han(1951) by Jeong, Bi-Seok convey ethics and value reasonable for the period of war, through romantic relationships between men and women. Firstly, Sa-rang-eui-haw-cheop describes a married couple who have the shape of a virtuous nationalist and a corrupt anti-nationalist. As a Catholic priest and a nun, they fall in love and come back to the earthly life. However, for the nation and the people that the husband decided to newly serve as Gods, he devotes himself to relief work. In the presence of this cause, the wife's personal desire is regarded as trifling. In the end, the wife defects to North Korea along with her husband who is a communist. But here, North Korea is almost like hell. The wife realizes that the important things are a mind, not a body, and the people, not individuals, after being punished to fall into hell. The wife's repeated confession makes her degrade to the perfect status of a sinner, rather than save her. Therefore, the novel ends, under the assumption that she would die or get lost. On the other hand, a female desire in Ae-jeong-moo-han seems to be thought, positively. One man feels affection for a woman who is his co-worker, while working in the propaganda division of North Korea, hiding his status. This woman takes the lead in mental and physical combination with him, proving the fact she isn't a communist. However, in fact, this woman does nothing but moves as the man desires, not being independent. In this novel, the Korean War is described as violence brought about by communism which is an absolute evil, and disillusions the male character. He tries to relieve his disillusionment, by loving a dutiful woman. Thus, the female character here is merely an utopia created by the fantasy of a man experiencing self-splitting and a sense of loss. Besides, she becomes an object of romantic remembrance, by dying a death. As explained above, each of these two novels shows a corrupt woman and an idealized woman, but they are both used as tools for supporting identities of the male characters, and stress the theme, anti-communism. In this respect, they have some characteristics in common.
