The study examined how Korean learners’ indirectness was realized in English refusal speech act performance. The study had two research questions, 1) how Korean learners of English express indirectness and what linguistic and pragmatic background they have, 2) if the chosen social factor, familiarity, influences the intended degree of directness and what the rationale is. Sixty nine college students participated and three types of data were used in the study. The DCT contained 8 situations of four eliciting speech acts; offer, invitation, suggestion, and request. The attached questionnaire to each DCT situations and retrospective interviews were collected and interchangeably analyzed. First, the participants’ intended degree of indirectness was not realized as they first desired. Some refusals with indirect intention were direct, and more number of refusals with direct intention was indirect. A few expressions were mistakenly used and the participants felt more difficulty in making direct refusals. Lack of linguistic knowledge, limited exposure to refusal speech acts might be the reason for the performance. The one social factor, familiarity seemed influential on the decision of intended indirectness. Yet, situational property affected the decision also.
