영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to suggest a proper translation of the last sentence of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, which reads "... government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth." The main focus of the paper is laid on the event noun phrase "government of the people, by the people, for the people," which is commonly translated into Korean as "inminui, inmine uihan, inmineul wihan jeongbu(인민의, 인민에 의한, 인민을 위한 정부)" by Korean translators. These translators appear to think of the word government in Lincoln's Address as the equivalent of the word 정부 in Korean. The English-Korean word match, however, does not seem to be appropriate. The word government is a derived noun which is ambiguous between the process (or event) and result readings. This paper shows that the word government in the Address was employed not as a result nominal but as a process (or event) nominal, which has its own argument structure like its verbal counterpart govern The subject NP of the last sentence of the Address must express a proposition or an event, which can be rephrased as 'the people govern the people for the people.' Therefore, "government" should rather be translated into Korean as 통치 or 지배.
