영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to develop models based on cultural understanding which can be used in elementary school English classes for underachievers in English. Based on Moran’s(2001) cultural experimental learning model, two kinds of cultural understanding learning models were developed and analysed for the study: one focused on self cultural understanding model and the other on understanding other cultures and interculturality. Along with communicative functions, to establish the contents of the models ten cultural themes were selected from the elementary school English textbooks which were used in the school the researcher teaches: greetings, countries, foods, weather and costumes, children’s games, houses, etiquettes, gestures, and cultural stereotypes. Using the selected themes appropriate syllabi were developed as samples for the teaching and learning process for twenty-two-week English classes. With the implementation of new models for underachievers in elementary school English some suggestions have been made for practical tips for the potential teachers’ application of these models to help their underachieving students.
