스토리텔링의 교육적 의의와 활용 방안 탐색

국문 초록

본 연구는 최근 사회 각 부면에서 각광을 받고 있는 스토리텔링이 지닌 교육적 의의와 활용 가능성을 이론적, 실천적으로 검토해보고자 하였다. 기존 선행 연구들을 개관한 결과, 대부분 교수자의 맥락에 치중하여 논의를 해왔고, 구체적으로 어떤 내용 특성을 다룰 때 특히 효과적인지에 대한 논의가 미흡하였으며, 주로 초·중등학교의 수준에서 적용되어 왔다는 점 등에서 제한점이 있었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 첫째, 스토리텔링의 교수방법적 의의와 효과를 분석하는 데 그치지 않고, 학생들이 스스로 스토리텔링을 구성하고 공유하는 과정을 거치도록 함으로써 그 효과와 의의를 보다 포괄적으로 검토해 보고자 하였다. 둘째, ‘가치갈등의 장으로서의 학교 교육과정’이라는 교육과정 분야의 핵심적인 이슈를 중심으로 적용해 봄으로써, 교육적 스토리텔링은 여러 관점들이 복합적으로 관련되고 학습자의 가치관 및 신념의 형성과 연계된 상황맥락적인 주제를 다룰 때 특히 효과적이라는 가정을 검증해보고자 하였다. 아울러, 셋째, 교직과정을 이수하는 대학생 및 교육대학원생들을 대상으로 한 강의에 이 방법을 적용함으로써 스토리텔링의 의의와 효과를 확장적으로 구현해보고자 하였다. 본 연구를 통해, 스토리텔링이 지닌 교수-학습방법으로서의 의의와 효과가 생생하게 분석, 논의되었고, 특히 스토리텔링을 상호 공유하는 과정을 통해 ‘주제가 있는 공통의 스토리 목록’을 가지게 된 점과, 예비교사들의 입장에서 스토리텔링의 구성 및 활용 가치, 평가의 관점 등에 대한 실천적 지식을 가지게 된 점이 가지는 메타교육적 의의가 강조되었다. 아울러 통합적, 맥락적, 감성적인 특성의 스토리텔링이 지닌 교육적 가치가 더욱 적극적이고 다양하게 탐구되고 응용될 필요가 있음을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This study explores the distinctive features and significance of storytelling as an educational method. During the last few years the number of references to storytelling has increased in a startling fashion. However, in the precedent studies, storytelling was discussed mainly as a teaching tool, and applied on the elementary or secondary school contexts. So, this study tries to expand the value of storytelling focusing on the learners' aspects and applying it to university students who are prospective teachers. The main theme of the lecture is the characteristic of the school curriculum as a value-conflict entity. The results highlight various effects of storytelling in education. Through this study, lots of impressive storytelling materials are developed and shared. The educational effectiveness of storytelling is empirically presented along with participants' vivid comments. It is proved storytelling can function as a means of active learning as well as conveying the tacit knowledge from the teacher. Students can integrate their previous knowledge and get broader perspectives during their own story-making and sharing the stories with other students. The multiplicity and value-conflicts of the social demands for school curriculum are reflected from the different viewpoints through the actions and intentions of the characters in the various stories. Moreover, the benefits of sharing the story indexes within the community are emphasized, and several areas of research on storytelling worthy of further exploration are suggested.
