국문 초록

불교와 토착문화가 결합한 팔관회(八關會)는 고대의 종교의식이 범국가적 종합축제로 발전해나가는 양상을 잘 보여주고 있다. 팔관회가 지닌 역사적·불교적 가치와 문화적·사회 통합적 가치 는 한국 특유의 축제로 승화시켜나갈 수 있는 확고한 기반에 해당한다. 특히 팔관회는 무형의 문화재에 해당하는 축제의 세부적인 의례절차와 내용이 『고려사』에 상세하게 묘사되어 있다. 따라서 기록문화로 전승된 평면적 팔관회를 입체적·역동적으로 재현하여 유무형의 전통문화를 총체적으로 재창조해내는 일은, 학술적·문화적 역량이 뒷받침되는 이 시대의 과업이라 할만하다. 팔관회를 복원한다고 할 때 기본적인 전제는, 중요하고 긍정적인 요소들을 살려나가되, 현대인이 공감하고 동참하는 불교축제로 재해석하는 작업이 따라야 한다는 점이다. 따라서 이 글에서 는 팔관회의 현대적 계승을 목적으로, 오늘날 팔관회를 현대 축제로 재조명 한다면 어떠한 방향성을 지닐 것 인지에 대해 설행시기와 의례 주제를 중심으로 개괄하였다. 팔관회에서 시기의 문제는 의례의 정체성을 드러내는 중요한 요소이다. 따라서 11월(개경의 중동팔관회)과 10월(개경의 중동팔관회)의 보름에 개최된 전통팔관회를 계승하면서 현대축제로 승화하는 데 가장 적합한 시기는 음력 10월 15일임을 살펴보았다. 팔관회의 주제는 크게 세 가지로 구분하여 제안하였다. 첫째 팔관회의 기원이 되는 재가불자들의 신행의식, 둘째 나라를 위해 흑은 공동체의 문제로 사망한 이들을 위한 위령의식, 셋째 전통 사상과 문화를 아우르는 종합축제이다. 이러한 주제를 담기 위해서는 일주일 정도의 기간이 필요하며, 특히 15일 이전의 6일간은 주로 불자·일반인을 중심으로 한 수행의식으로 진행하는 것이 바람직하다.

영문 초록

The Palgwanhoe ceremony, a combination of Buddhism and indigenous culture, is a good representation of the development of an ancient religious ceremony into a national festival. The historical and Buddhist value of Palgwanhoe, in addition to its integrated cultural and social values, create a strong foundation that position it as a new, uniquely Korean festival. The processes and contents of the Palgwanhoe ceremony, considered intangible cultural assets, are described in detail in "The History of Korea". It is the task of this modern era to recreate the flat record of the Palgwanhoe in a three-dimensional and dynamic manner in light of advances in academic and cultural competency. The restoration of the Palgwanhoe depends on emphasizing its positive, important features while reinterpreting it as a Buddhist festival that is relevant to and widely shared by a modern audience. Therefore, this paper focuses on what a recreated Palgwanhoe would look like, when it would be held, and future directions in order for it to become a reality. The issue of timing is an important factor determining the identity of the ceremony. The optimal date for Palgwanhoe as a modern festival is October 15, as it was traditionally held through a fortnight between November and October. We can divide the Palgwanhoe ceremony proposed in this paper into three themes; a ceremony for married lay Buddhists, a ritual appeasing the spirits of those who gave their lives in service for the nation and community, and an integrated festival of traditional thought and culture. In order to explore all three themes, one week is necessary. In particular, it would be advisable for Buddhist and ordinary citizens to engage in meditation practice six days before the 15 ^th.
