‘우물을 못 파게 하는 민속’에 대하여

국문 초록

한국에서 60-70년 전 까지만 해도 ‘우물을 못 파게 히는 민속’이 상당히 널리 퍼져 있었고, 이러한 전통이 유지되고 있던 마을을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있었다. 이러한 전통은 주로 풍수적인 이유 때문에 생겨나서 시행해 온 것으로 풀이 되었다. 풍수에서는 각 지역의 경치 즉 땅의 모양새를 사람 또는 물건에 비추어 파악하고 실제 그러한 사람이나 물건인양 취급하는 풍습이 있었다. 예를 든다면, 배가둥둥 떠가는 형(行舟形)에 위치한 마을에서는 우물 파는 것을 금하는데 왜냐 하면 우물파는 행동이 배 바닥에 구멍을 내는 격이기 때문이라고 한다. 우물을 파지 못하게 하는 민속 뒤에는 이러한 풍수적인 설명이 따랐다. 이러한 우물금기 풍속은 행주형에 국한된 것으로 이제까지 알려졌으나 나는 최근 다른 풍수 형국인 금계포란형에서도 우물을 파지 못하게 하는 민속이 시행되었던 것에 주목하게 되었다. 금계포란형에서 우물을 못 파게 하는 이유는 알을 품고 있는 닭이 놀라지 않게 하기 위한 것이라거나 또는 우물에서 물을 퍼내는 것이 닭에서 피를 뽑는 격이라는 것이다. 행주형에서 우물을 못 파게 하는 것은 논리적으로 이해가 쉽다. 그러나 금계포란형에서 우물을 못 파게 하는 이유는 견강부회적이고 이해가 쉽지 않다. 이러한 면을 통해서 우물 금기에 대한 풍수적 설명을 다시 고려해 볼 때 우물금기 배후에는 ‘우물을 파지 못하게 하는 민속’에 힘을 싣기 위하여 주술점인 힘이 있는 풍수적인 설명을 갖다 붙인 면을 보게 된다. 그래서 나는 우물을 못 파게 하는 민속이 풍수에서 나와서 풍수때문에 시행되었다기 보다는 별개로 존재하던 한국 고유 민속이 풍수설과 결부되어 사람들이 그 민속을 받아들이게 하기 위하여 풍수의 주술적인 힘을 빌려 풍수적인 설명을 하게 된 것이라고 추리하는 것이다.

영문 초록

Many settlements in Korea are reported to have practiced the custom of forbidding wells in their settlements. The reasons that were frequently given for the avoidance of wells in Korean settlements (especially villages) were based on geomancy (pungsu in Korean). In geomancy, local landscapes are personified and named after animate or inanimate objects such as a 'reclining cow' or 'sailing boat'. In the geomantic landscape of a 'sailing boat', digging wells were prohibited, because such an action was analogous to making a hole in the bottom of a boat. This implies that a settlement in such a situation will lose fortune and experience misfortune. For this geomantic reason, the residents in 'the sailing boat' landscape were encouraged to fetch water from streams and rivers. It has been previously understood that 'the avoidance of wells' existed only in the geomantic landscape ofa sailing boat. However, I have noticed that a village in another type of geomantic landscape, 'a golden hen sitting on eggs', also prohibited the digging of wells. A geomantic explanation given for this case was that drawing water from the well may frighten the hen or was analogous to extracting blood from the hen. The analogy of digging wells in 'a sailing boat' case is more readily understandable, but the case of 'a golden hen sitting on eggs' is more difficult to account for. Upon closer analysis of the 'golden hen sitting on eggs' landscape, the supposed geomantic reasoning behind the prohibition on building wells on such dwelling sites appears contrived and senseless. Instead, it is most likely that geomantic reasoning was used as a convenient justification to avoid the digging of wells in certain villages. For these reasons, I conjecture that the folk custom of prohibiting wells in some Korean villages was not originally from geomancy but was an independent indigenous Korean idea apart from geomancy.
