영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current situation of creativity and character education at elementary schools. This study uses survey questionnaires to examine teachers’ and students’ recognition of the necessity of creativity and character education, the significance of character education verses creativity education, obstacles to creativity and character education, and preferred teaching/learning activities for creativity and character education at the elementary level. The survey data were collected from 151 elementary school teachers and 281 elementary school students among 15 different elementary schools in Korea. The results show that they perceive that the application of creativity and character education in their English classes is not easier compared to other subjects. There are also differences between teacher and student groups in their perception of the easiness of creativity and character education in their school subjects. The two groups have different perceptions regarding the feasibility of creativity and character education in different subjects. Both groups recognize the necessity of creativity and character education in English classes but think that character education is more important than creativity education. The most severe obstacles to creativity and character education are teachers’ excessive class hours, class size, and lack of proper educational programs. Teachers and students’ mostly preferred activities for creativity and character education were role play, brainstorming, and mind map.
