국문 초록

수세기를 이어온 상징성과 예술성으로 유네스코 세계문화유산이 된 리투아니아 십자가와 한국의 장승은 신성함과 속성을 동시에 지난 대표적인 민속 예술임과 동시에, 국가가 존폐 위기에 있을 때 문화적 정체성과 민족적 특성을 지키도록 도와준 ‘종족상징주의’의 중요한 매체로 자리매김했다. ‘종족상징주의(ethno-symbolism)’이란 안토니 스미스가 주창한 이론으로 민족의 영토와 그 공동체 안에서 사용되는 다양한 상징들은 식민지나 오랜 지배의 세월을 끝마친 나라들이 국가를 창설해 가는 과정에서 중요한 문화적 근거를 만들어준다는 것이다. 십자가는 리투아니아인들이 오랜 외세의 압제와 소련의 지배를 견디도록 하는데, 장승은 근대 이후 정치적 격동기 속에서 일반민중들의 심성 속에서 민족의식을 불러일으키는 중요한 매개체로 작용하기도 했다. 그런 차원에서 이 두공예예술은, 신성을 표현하기 위한 목적으로 만들어지기 시작했으나 점차 종족 민족주의의 형성화 과정에서 속성으로의 변화가 뚜렷이 나타나게 된 것이다. 이 논문은, 리투아니아와 한국, 두 민족이 전통적 신성을 표현하기 위해 고안된 민속예술인 십자가와 장승을 통해 그 속성으로의 변화가 어떻게 이루어졌는지를, 각 국가의 민속 신앙속의 나무에 대한 개념, 각 공예에 드러나는 장식 표현의 시대적 변천, 종족민족주의가 구체화되던 시대적 배경 등을 중심으로 고찰해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Lithuanian crosses enrolled into the list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO for the magnificent symbolism and jangseung, the wooden totem poles of Korea functioned as the representative craft art endowed with secularity and sanctity at the same time as well as a significant means of ethno-symbolism which helped the people to preserve and maintain the cultural identity and national peculiarity, while being in the danger of exinction. The ethno-symbolism evoked by A. Smith claims that most nations were based on ethnic ties and sentiments and on popular ethnic traditions, which have provided the cultural resources for later nation formation, to turn ex-colonies into territorial nations must forge a cultural unity and identity of myth, symbol, value, and memory that can match that of nations built of pre-existing ties, if they are to survive and flourish as nations. The attributes of Lithuanian crosses and jangseung, which were initially established to express the religiosity of nation, were gradually converted into the secular character for maintaining the national identities during the rapid political and social transition, namely ethno-symbolism.
