근대 출판문화 정착에 있어 경성서적업조합의 역할에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

일제 초기는 출판사 수의 증가와 이들 간의 경쟁으로 서적의 중복출판과 할인경쟁이 빈번하였고, 그 결과 서적의 정가제도가 붕괴될 위험에 있었다. 출판사들은 이러한 문제를 해결하고자 1916년 경성서적업조합이라는 동업자조합을 설립하였다. 우선 조합은 저작권 없는 서적에 대한 배타적 출판과 조합원간 공동발매를 통해 불필요한 중복출판을 지양함으로써 서적의 정가제도를 정착시키고 이를 통해 서적시장의 안정화를 꾀하였다. 또 규약을 정해 출판물 교환을 조합원 간에만 시행하고 서적의 공동발매를 위해 판매도서목록을 발행, 조합을 중심으로 한 서적 유통체계의 구축을 시도하였다. 조선도서주식회사 및 대동인쇄주식회사를 설립하여 다양한 서적관련 사업도 구상하며 사회 내 출판 사업의 영역을 확대시켜 나가기도 하였다. 비록 상업자본주의 출판환경에서 큰 성과를 보지 못하였으나 본 조합은 출판계의 각종 당면문제를 해결하기 위한 서적상들의 자생적 협력조직으로서 판권에 대한 일반의 인식을 확산시키고, 신서적 출판을 독려하며 정가제도 정착 등 다양한 노력을 벌임으로써 결과적으로 근대적 출판문화를 정착시켜 가는 데 많은 영향을 미치었던 것으로 평가된다.

영문 초록

During the Japanese Occupation, the sharp increase of the publishing companies resulted in the problems of plagiarizing publication, excessive price competition and hence the collapse of fixed price system. To cope with this troubled situation, booksellers established a trade union which is called “Kyungseong Booksellers' Union” through joint investment in 1916. The union which the most of booksellers in Kyungseong had joined tried to protect the interest of the copyright owners by solving the problem of plagiarizing publication through the exclusive-publishing and the joint-sales of non copyrighted books. The union also attempted to perform a role of exclusive distributor of books by the way of the exchange of books between union members and the joint-sales. In addition to that they planned a lot of business ideas related to the books and publication. But due to the fierce competition between book sellers their efforts didn't make desired achievements. Nevertheless as a self-organized cooperation union to solve their facing problems in the publication industry and as a Korean booksellers' union united against the powerful Japanese booksellers' union, this Kyungseong Booksellers' Union has a great significance in publication industry in those times.
