국문 초록

상상가능성(conceivability) 개념은 서양 근대철학에서 필연성, 가능성, 불가능성과 같은 다양한 양상개념의 판단 근거로 널리 사용된 핵심적인 개념이다. 흥미로운 사실은 이 판단기준은 데카르트와 같은 합리론자들 뿐만 아니라, 흄 같은 경험론자들 모두에게 널리 받아들여져 왔고 따라서 근대철학의 핵심적인 다양한 논증들에 널리 사용된 중요한 개념이다. 본 논문은 양상개념이란 형이상학적 사실에 대한 인식론적인 이 기준의 적합성에 대한 현대적인 반론의 싹이 이미 18세기 토마스 리이드에 의해 이미 예견되었으며, 이 리이드의 비판을 적절히 방어할 수 있으면, 20세기에 새로운 “본질주의”철학에 의해 제기되는 현대적인 비판도 적절히 방어될 수 있음을 보일 것을 목표로 한다. 기본적으로 논문은 상상가능성 기준에 대한, 수학적/형이상학적으로 불가능한 사태로야기되는 여러 가지 반례들은 이제까지 주목되지 않은 “상상가능성”개념의 애매성을 구분함으로 적절히 방어될 수 있다고 논증한다. 논문은 강한 상상가능성 개념과 약한 상상 가능성 개념이 다음과 같이 정식화되고 구분될 수 있다고 제안한다. (C1) P is strongly conceivablefor S iff S sees that P is possible. (C2) If P is a proposition that S is considering, then P is weakly conceivablefor S if S does not see that P is impossible. 특히 전자 (C1)의 상상가능성 개념은 다음과 같이 약화된 형식으로 이해될 수 있으며, (C3) If p is strongly conceivable for S, S is prima faciejustified in believing p to be possible. 이 기준은 이제까지 제안된 근대적 현대적 반대사례를 적절히 봉쇄할 수 있다는 것을 논문을 통해 보여주려고 노력한다. 끝으로 논문은 이러한 상상가능성 기준에 대한 논란이 어떻게 철학사상 핵심적인 중요논증들의 올바른 이해에 기여할 수 있는지 지적한다.

영문 초록

In the modern philosophy since the time of Descartes, the concept of conceivability was an established maxim aptly used both by rationalists and empiricists. And so naturally, the concept as a criterion of metaphysical modality was widely used as key premises in various historically famous philosophical arguments. I choose Cartesian argument for substance dualism and Hume's argument for Induction scepticism as paradigm samples of the maxim at work. Given the importance of these major arguments, the commentators of later days most often have found the flaws in the arguments in the very use of this conceivability criterion. If I am not mistaken, this sort practise goes on even in the 21th century philosophical literature. The main object of this paper is to argue for the principle itself and defend the proper interpretations of this criterion. The key to see how this defend works, lies in noticing the crucial ambiguity of 'Not seeing the impossibility' involving various putative counterexamples against the maxim. I distinguish the two senses of the phrase can be cashed out as follows; (C1) P is strongly conceivable for S iff S sees that P is possible. (C2) If P is a proposition that S is considering, then P is weakly conceivable for S iff S does not see that P is impossible. And ultimately, I argue, there is a cogent interpretation of 'conceivable' in the following form. (C3) If p is strongly conceivable for S, S is prima facie justified in believing p to be possible. I put to test my defence against the well-known counterexamples like Goldbach's conjecture and/or Kripkean metaphysical necessity such as 'Water is H2O'. And I tried to show that fallibilized version can nullify the force of these counterexamples. Indeed I tried to show that once we are clear about different senses of 'conceivable', we cane see that to generate counterexamples one need or must suppose in advance some form of modal intuitions or criteria, which must be captured in the above forms. Finally I tried to show that once the maxim can be defended in cogent ways, we can view and re-assess the major modern philosophical arguments in a new fresh point of view.
