세계 공용어로서의 영어의 현장과 미래

국문 초록

영어는 타의 추종을 불허하는 제1의 세계어가 된 결과로 세계 속에 퍼져있는 다양한 이형태의 전면적인 등장이라는 새로운 문제를 낳았다. 구어중심으로 각 이형태간의 차이점은 서로간의 의사 소통의 문제를 야기할 정도이고 통합보다는 지역적인 방언으로의 독립적인 행보로 발전해나갈 것이다. 구체적인 예상모습은 McArthur(1987), Görach(1990), 김명숙(2005)에서볼 수 있다. 이형태의 발음, 어휘, 문법 및 화용에서 개별적인 특색은 독특한 양상을 보이고 있다. 영어의 미래는 과거 라틴어와는 달리 현재의 세계화의 구도가 경제전쟁을 치루고 있기 때문에 국제화가 지속적으로 가속됨으로 일단 공용어의 우위를 점한 영어는 절대적 선두주자인 영어가 밀려날 수는 없을 것이다. 더불어 Crytal(2003:191)의 주장처럼 현재 6억이상 인 영어의 외국어화자수가 급증하고 있는 추세는 이를 더 확실히 예측하게 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the present state of English as a global language and to expect the future of it. To get the clear evidence of differences in the world English varieties, it describes the major characteristics of each of them briefly in historical and sociolinguistic backgrounds, vocabulary, phonology, grammar, pragmatics and others. Firstly, from great differences we found especially in vocabulary, sound and a certain amount of differences in grammar and pragmatics, we can expect that more differences would like to increase in the future among these varieties especially in phonological and morphological forms and grammar in order because the spoken forms has been changed more abundantly than the written form. Secondly, we also expect that the independent right of each variety as one of world Englishes would be strengthened faster than expected owing to its fast growing power in world politics, economics and the increasing number of speakers in the future. In the expectation of the future of English, even though there must be several factors-political, economical, technological or cultural ones which can impede the future growth of English in the world, but all of them do not have great impact as a noticeable barrier. On the contrary, the strength and inevitable situation which has to choose English as a necessary world common communication method, can work abundantly and incessantly. Therefore there must be no great change which influences the decrease of using English as a global language in the future.
