영문 초록

The Jungweon Goguryeo Monument is one of the most important artifacts in terms of studies and researches dealing with the history of the Three-dynasties period. Yet there are still debates going on over the translation of the material, and ideas are still clashing with each other over the issues of determining the time it was erected and the nature of the monument itself. As a result, the scholars and researchers do not seem to be able to reach a consensus regarding the historical figures and facets of the Three-dynasties period that are expected to be unearthed by the examination of the Jungweon Goguryeo monument. In this article, the current situation of studies concentrating upon the Jungweon Goguryeo monument will be examined, and the aspects that should receive further attentions in future studies, or the aspects that are expected to be discussed in the future, will be briefly discussed as well. Deciphering of the inscription found upon the surface of the Jungweon Goguryeo monument was first conducted in 1979, by the scholars who participated in the discovering and initial survey of the monument. In subsequent periods, several scholars announced their own efforts of achieving a general and overall translation of the monument’s inscription, but a comprehensive examination of the data provided by the monument had to wait till 2000, when the Goguryeo Research Institute launched a joint study project. Yet, in spite of alI the efforts that have been accumulated for the past decades, there are still many remaining issues regarding deciphering and translating, over which scholars and researchers are not ready to reach an agreement. Issues such as whether there has been a Jae-aek/題額 title, or questions regarding proper identification of the letters, are cases that are most debated in terms of proper translation. For the latter cases, the ‘Sangwang/相王-Jowang/祖王’ debate concerning the identification of a letter in the first row, the ‘Sangha Sangji/上下相知-Sangha Sanghwa/上下相和’ debate concerning the identification of a letter in the second row, and the ‘25th(二十五日)-23rd(二十三日)’ debate concerning the identification of a letter in the 7th row, are the most prominent examples. In the case of the Jae-aek title, some of the scholars, either back then or even today, are arguing that such title had existed when the monument was first found, but it is a general opinion that such title had never existed in the first place. And with regard to the 1st row issue, it seems that the letter in question should be perceived as ‘Jowang/祖王’， instead of ‘Sangwang’, but the meaning of this term and other examples of the term's usage should be clarified in furrher studies. In the case of the 2nd row issue, it is highly difficult to identify the form of the letter, yet practically there is no profound difference in meaning between the letter ‘Ji/知’ and ‘Hwa/和’ , so the matter itself is of no grave consequence. And in case of the 7th row issue, most of the scholars have come to agree that the letter shows ‘23rd’(and not 25th) of December. Another issue that has been debated for years, alongside the issue of proper deciphering and translating, was the determination of the time and period the monument was from. In recent studies, it is attempted to perceive the time periods of the historic events that are described by the inscription, and the actual date of the Jungweon Goguryeo monument’s erection, separately. Ruling out the opinions of the minority, the time point of the events’ occurrence is believed to have been either the year 449 or 480. In the early days of studies of the monument, many scholars believed that the events described upon the monument had occurred in 480, but recently more and more scholars came to argue that the events must have had occurred in 449, than 480.
