Examined in this article, are the recent historical studies, which were all over the issue of Goguryeo dynasty’s history and have been conducted by either South Korean scholars or North Korean ones since China announced its Dong-Buk Gongjeong Project(Northeast Asian Project), of which the theme and underlying directives would undoubtedly result in producing false understanding and massive distortion of the truth. In case of South Korea, numerous academic conferences and conventions were arranged and held, and many books were published. Most of them criticised China’s attempts of distorting the history of Goguryeo, and examined the historical identity of the Goguryeo dynasty as part of the Korean history. Also, in order to boost the public interest in this matter, public educative materials have been being frequently published. The ancient burial mounds of the Goguryeo dynasty, and also the mural paintings found inside them, are being actively studied, coinciding with the fact that the Goguryeo dynasty’s ancient burial mounds were recently designated as Cultural Inheritance of the World. In North Korea, the Chinese attempts of producing false images regarding the history of the Goguryeo dynasty did not become an issue as it did inside South Korea, but an academic conference honoring the 2300th(supposed) anniversary of the birth of King Dongmyeong-wang(the Founder of the Goguryeo dynasty) was held, and the participants raised voices in criticizing China’s deliberate distortion of facts and twisted historical interpretations. Just like the South Korean scholars, North Korean scholars are also conducting active studies of the Goguryeo dynasty’s ancient burial mounds, and published the results, albeit for internal viewing only. Initially the North Korean authorities were hesitant in arranging joint efforts between the South and North Korean scholars and authorities such as joint conferences or photograph exhibitions, but apparently they had changed their mind and turned to appear more active, after the ancient burial mounds of the Goguryeo dynasty were designated as part of World Cultural Inheritance on July 1st. It is evident that the North Korean scholars and authorities are also very much interested in the issue of successfully overcoming the Chinese attempts of projecting distorted images of the history of the Goguryeo dynasty. In the future, both South and North Korean people should engage themselves more actively in joint studies and joint excavations in order to obtain more knowledge and understanding of the history and culture of the Goguryeo dynasty. A unified database designed to contain all the historical data regarding the Goguryeo dynasty that have been collected by both South and Nonh Korean personnel should be established. Also, excavation projects joined by both South and North Korean scholars and researchers should be arranged in excavating all kinds of vestiges located in either the South or North part of the Korean peninsula. The results of those excavations should be shared by all Koreans, and to help the general public to have more interest in the history and culture of the Goguryeo dynasty, joint exhibitions should be arranged as well.
