In this article, the life of the renowned figure Shin Suk Ju and his studies as well, will be examined through reviewing several historical resources, such as the introductory remarks & bibliographical notes which were intended for the then-newly invented Korean letters Hangeul/‘한글’ (also referred to as Hunmin Jeongeum/訓民正音), or the assembled directives of pronunciation for cases which would involve Chinese letters, and also studies of the Chinese language which had been being established at the time. The Korean peninsula is very closely located to China in geographic terms, and the region and the people imported countless cultural assets including expertise and experiences in terms of political. judiciary and administrative policies. So for the Korean people, naturally there had been continuous encounters with the Chinese language. Especially, the process of using the Chinese letters in describing, writing or pronouncing the Korean language enabled the people to recognize the historical changes the Chinese language had gone through, and also to recognize both the differences and similarities between the Korean language and the Chinese language. As a result, Shin Suk Ju and the others managed to have a deep understanding of the nature and internal mechanism of the then-newly invented Korean letter system(the Hunmin Jeongum). They also actually participated in the task of establishing bibliographical notes for the new letter system, and the task of creating the Hunmin Jeongeum itself. Shin Suk Ju himself also hugely contributed to the task of establishing Korean style of pronunciation(東音: represented by newly invented Korean letters) for individual Chinese letters, and to the task of publishing the 『Dongguk Jeongun/東國正韻』. Later, out of his deep interests in educating the public about the Chinese language, he translated the contents of 『Hongmu Jeongun/洪武正韻』, which was a standard pronunciation dictionary of the Chinese language at the time, into Korean language and presented it with commentaries made by himself. The studies of translations and interpretations(譯學), which were designed to study all kinds of foreign languages including the Chinese language, had always occupied a prominent status in the history of researches of traditional Korean linguistic studies. If there had not been linguistic studies regarding the Northen Chinese pronunciations, which resulted in the publication of the 『Gogeum Unhwae/古今韻會』 during the reign of King Saejong, the revolutionary 23 consonants and vowels in the Dongguk Jeongun would not have been invented to represent the Korean language. If efforts had only been concentrated upon studying 『Jeolun』-typed traditional pronunciation manuals, the Hunmin Jeongeum might have been established with 36 consonants and vowels systems(such as the Mongolians had with their Palsapa/八思巴 letters, which did not match their own language either), and might even have had to live out only a short life span as a temporary pronunciation device. Considering such possibilities, the studies of translation and interpretation conducted by Shin Suk Ju and the others do have an important meaning in the history of researches regarding traditional Korean linguistic studies.
