국문 초록

본 논문은 1960년부터 1989년까지 이태원에 살았던 트랜스젠더의 역사를 추적하고, 이를 통해 한국 역사에서 규범적 젠더와 비규범적 젠더가 생산되는 과정을 탐구한다. 이태원은 미군 부대의 기지촌으로서 1960년대 즈음부터 본격적으로 유흥과 상업지역으로 변모한다. 이태원 지역 트랜스젠더는 이태원의 공간 형성과 발달에 있어 역사적 궤를 같이 한다. 1960년대 이태원과 그 인근 지역엔 적잖은 트랜스젠더가 모여 들었고 초기 형태의 트랜스젠더 업소가 생겨났다. 1970년대엔 많은 트랜스젠더가 이태원에 살았음에도 한국 사회의 안보정국과 군사화의 영향으로 트랜스젠더 관련 기록 자체가 줄어들었다. 이는 군사화된 남성성 기획이 인간을 젠더 이분법으로 분명하게 구분하는 기술이었음을 역설한다. 1980년대 이태원은 경제적 호황을 누렸다. 하지만 에이즈가 보고되고 민주화 운동이 활발해지면서 트랜스젠더는 상당한 어려움을 겪는다. 이러한 역사 추적을 통해 본 연구는 역사적으로 누락된 존재인 트랜스젠더의 역사를 (재)구성하였다. 또한 지배 규범에서 재현하는 젠더의 역사는 비규범적 젠더 행위자를 의도적으로 누락하고, 누락을 통해 지배 질서를 유지하고 있음을 밝힌다.

영문 초록

The follow thesis traces the history of transgender individuals in Itaewon during 1960 to 1989. It will examine the ways in which gender norms were constructed and how people outside these gender norms lived during this historical period. Itaewon was known as the military-based town since the Korean War. However, Itaewon began to transform into a red-light commercial district in the 1960s. There were only a few mtf(male-to-female) transgender gathered in Itaewon and nearby bars/clubs before the significant rise of the transgender population during the 1970s. However, due to the intensely widespread presence of the military regime, the records and documents of transgender people living in this area had dwindled. The dominating militarized ideology functioned as the way to police and reinforce the binary gender norms in Korean society. During the 1980s, Itaewon had reached an economic boom, while the first case of HIV was reported and the nation's democratization movement gained strength across the country. These social and political climates created structures that produced numerous challenges for many transgender individuals. The hegemonic order was maintained by the government, which deliberately excluded transgender people from finding their own agency and voices from various Korean historical perspectives. This paper sheds light to the existence of transgender individuals who were historically marginalized, which prevented them from constructing their own history.
