국문 초록

미국은 남북전쟁 기간 중에 Morrill Act를 제정하여 무상토지증여대학(The land-grant college and universities)을 설립하고 이들 대학에 농업, 공업, 국방에 관한 교육과정을 개설, 교육하도록 하여 전쟁 이후 본격적으로 대두하게된 산업화와 근대화의 주역을 담당할 고급인력을 양성하는 길을 열어놓았다. 또한 Morrill Act의 제정으로 미국의 각 주는 적어도 1개 이상의 주립대학을 설립함으로써 됨으로써 고등교육의 확장에 견인차 역할을 하게 되었을 뿐만 아니라, 이제까지 사립대학에 의존하고 있던 미국의 고등교육을 주립대학이 상당부분 맡아 하면서 대학원 교육을 위한 기폭제가 되었다. 이렇듯이 Morrill Act는 교육적으로는 미국의 주립대학 설립의 효시가 되고 고등교육의 확장에 절대적인 기여를 하였을 뿐만 아니라, 사회적으로 농촌의 젊은이들이 사회적 신분상승을 성취하는 계기를 제공하였다는데 시사하는 바가 크다 하겠다.

영문 초록

This study was designed to analyze the periodical changes of American higher education with its main focus on the Morrill Act, or The Land Grant College and Universities Act. The implications are as follows First. the land grant schools founded by the Morrill Act were rellections of the process of modernization and industrialization widely influencing American society. Second. the Morrill Act played an important role for expansion of higher education in the United States. Also the establishment of the land grant colleges was clearly a major redirection in American higher education. Third. the mandatory military instruction in the United States began pursuant to the Morrill Act. Fourth the Morrill Act made a contribution to developing and improving the relationship between federal and state governments. Fifth, the Morrill Act developed pragmatic education as well as social mobility of rural young people.
