국문 초록

본 논문은 한국 현대도예의 1세대 작가인 황종구의 역할과 작품을 위한 발제적 연구임을 전제한다. 본론의 1절은 황종구의 사업가적 성향을 이화여대 도예연구소의 설립과 관련하여 고찰하는 한편 교육적 영향에 대해 기술하였다. 1958년 이화여자대학교에 교수로 부임과 동시에 도예연구소를 설립하여 고려청자의 재현과 현대화를 위해 노력하였으며 교육 또한 전통의 이해를 기반으로 한 현대적 창조를 목표로 하였다. 태토의 성분, 유약의 재료 등 실제 도자 원료의 현장답사를 위해 학생들과 함께 전국을 찾아다니며 실용적인 학문연구를 할 수 있도록 하였다. 2절에서는 창의적 작가로서의 특징을 그가 남긴 다량의 도면과 구상도 및 문양을 근거로 서술하였다. 생산을 위한 도면에는 정확한 치수까지 기재하여 결과물에 대한 오차가 없도록 한 점이 괄목되며 문양은 26종류의 세부항목으로 분류된다. 이미지들은 사실적인 묘사로부터 반구상적인 디자인 그리고 추상에 이르기까지 일정한 형식에 얽매이지 않고 광범위하게 걸쳐 있다. 3절에서는 황종구의 작품들을 ‘전통의 현대화’와 ‘창조된 형태’로 나누어 고찰하였다. 그는 청자를 기반으로 한 현대적 양식의 작품은 물론 색유도자와 백자에까지 창작의 범위를 넓힌 인물이기도 하였다. 작품의 형태 또한 물레 성형에서 이루어지는 전형적인 양식에서부터 여러 가지 형태를 조합하여 재구성하는 실험적인 양식에 이르기까지 다채로운 방법을 추구하였다.

영문 초록

This thesis is based on the research in role and works of Hwang Jong-Koo who is the first generation of Korean contemporary ceramics. In the first chapter of the body, Hwang Jong-Koo’s entrepreneurial sense was studied through the establishment of ceramic research center in Ewha Womans University, and his influence as an educator was delineated. In 1959, as soon as he was appointed to Ewha Womans University, he established ceramic research center and striven to accomplish the revival of Korean Celadon and its modernization. His educational philosophy was modernistic creation based upon understanding the tradition. He traveled the whole nation with students visiting the site of ingredient for clay and glaze, which provided students the opportunity to execute pragmatic research. In the second chapter, as a creative artist, his characteristics were studied based upon numerous plan drawings, sketches and patterns. Exact measurements were written on the plan drawings in order to execute his plan without a hitch, and the patterns were categorized in 26 types. From realistic description to abstract design, he did not stick too much to formalities. In last chapter of the body, works of Hwang Jong-Koo were examined in two different approaches: ‘modernization of the tradition’ and ‘created forms’. He created number of contemporary works that are based on Korean Celadon, and he expanded his field of creation to colored ceramic and porcelain. He sought various techniques in terms of creating the shapes of works from traditional method like wheel throwing to experimental formality such as reconstructing work through combining different forms.
