This paper aims at illuminating the life of Haesu Kim Wu-jeong, a native of Sajik-dong(社稷洞), Dongnae-gu(東萊區), Busan(釜山) who was taken to Japan as a prisoner of war after the fall of Dongnae-seong(fortress) in the Imjin War(壬辰倭亂: Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592) and returned home after suffering a lot of hardships. The people who underwent troubles during the Imjin War were diverse in their status. Among them, scholars left records of their own sufferings as prisoners of war and then Japanese state of affairs. The verses Kim Wu-jeong handed down to us are found in 『The Collected Works of Haesu(海叟先生文集)』. This collection was published by many scholars of Dongnae-bu(東萊府) in 1852(the 3rd year of King Cheoljong’s reign) and its foreword was written by Lee Hwi-yeong(李彙寧) who came here as Dongnae Magistrate(東萊府使) in 1851(the 2nd year of King Cheoljong(哲宗)’s reign). Volume 1 has one quatrain with five Chinese characters in each line named 『Sanjae(山齋)』, two quatrains with seven-word lines titled 『Ganyang(看羊)』, a verse 『Jangmunpo(長門浦) with Gangsueun(姜睡隱) Hang(沆) speak a remember』 and nine prose works of 『Give Jeonghangang(鄭寒岡) Gu(逑)』, 『Write and show to a fellow student(書示同門生)』 etc. In 『The record of old day’s paper〈故紙遺錄〉』, the names of alumni who studied Confucianism together were recorded. Among the nine pieces of prose, the one sent to Jeong Gu is what Kim Wujeong asked on the meanings he doubted in Confucian scriptures and the rest consists of the answers to the questions about Confucian scriptures and suggestions to other alumni. Volume 2 carries appendices such as two 『The Dongnae Magistrate’s report(報巡營文)』 by Dongnae Magistrate Lee Hong-mang(李弘望) and O Han-won(吳翰源), 『A life history(行錄) by Dongnae Magistrate Hong Myeong-han(洪名漢) and Extra life history(書行錄後)』 by 12 writers including Dongnae Magistrate Han Chi-eung(韓致應). It also contains 『Record of Hyanggyeongjae(鄕敬齋記)』, 『Record of new build Hyanggyeongjae(鄕敬齋新建記)』 and contents of ancestral rites. In the end, there are four ‘Hyanggyeongjae poems(鄕敬齋題詠)’ of Park Gi-bok(朴基馥), Kim Hong-ju(金洪柱), Kim Ro(金潞) and Kim Jae-gi(金在淇). His life as a prisoner of war and his return from Japan is confirmed only in the three poems and A life history(行錄) of The Collected Works. However, Kim Wu-jeong’s life as a prisoner of war and his association with various people including Kang Hang can be sufficiently referred to in the records of Kang Hang and 『The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄)』. Though The Collected Worksis not enough as real documents of a war prisoner and its works are not considerable in the number, the value as materials to confirm part of then records is substantial. And as the records of the Imjin War Busan preserves are historical fragments, 『The Collected Works of Haesu(해수선생문집)』 is really significant because it will complete them. Moreover, considering the writers including Kang Hang who kept records of the read situations as prisoners of war were captured after the year 1597 but Kim Wu-jeong was taken as a war prisoner after 1592, and Haesu’s writings are the only records of a war prisoner in the Gyeongsang-do region, research on him together with the discourse on the records of prisoners of war in the Imjin War previously discussed is highly meaningful.
