「復其初」와 「克己復禮」를 통해본 中國書法

국문 초록

書法을 대개 세 방면으로 나누어 얘기할 수가 있으니, 用筆ㆍ結構ㆍ風格이 그것이다. 그런데 書法을 공부하는데 있어 무엇이 관건인가 하는 것에 대해서는, 用筆이라고 보는 것이 일반적인 견해이다. 그러나 結構라고 보는 견해도 있으니, 用筆을 집을 짓기 위해 벽돌을 만드는 것으로 비유해 볼 때, 아무리 좋은 질의 벽돌을 만들어 가지고 있다하더라도, 結構 造型의 기술이 없다면 아름다운 집을 짓기가 어렵다고 보는 것이다. 필자의 생각엔, 기본적인 용필법을 연마하는 동시에 결구법도 아울러 동시에 연구하는 것이 좋을 것 같다. 왜냐하면 용필과 결구 두 문제의 핵심을 제대로 장악한 연후에야 비로소 자기 나름의 예술적인 風格을 갖춘 書法 作品을 생산할 수 있으리라 생각되기 때문이다. 그러면 과연 용필과 결구의 원칙은 무엇인가? 필자는 본고에서 用筆의 원칙을 「復其初」로 보았고, 結構의 원칙을 「克己復禮」로 보았다. 즉 用筆에서는 점ㆍ획의 중간이나 끝의 「復其初」의 운동을 통해 작품 안의 모든 점ㆍ획들이 자신 나름의 고유한 에느르기를 충분히 발휘하여 그 총합으로 좋은 작품을 생산하고 있으며, 結構上에서는 글자를 구성하는 모든 단위들이 「克己復禮」의 정신을 갖고 서로의 개별 의지를 십분 양보하여 전체의 조화에 참여하고 있다고 생각된다. 그래서 결국 書法이란, 단순하게 점ㆍ획을 단세포적으로 만들어 조립하는 시각적 예술인 아닌, 「天地之心」 즉 「生生」의 「仁」의 정신에 입각한 「復」의 원리를 道로 삼고서, 「和而不同」ㆍ「和而불流」를 통해 「克己復禮」를 구현하는 철학적 의미를 가진 예술이라고 결론지을 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

When we talk about the calligraphy, we can have three aspects of it ; the way to hand le a Chinese brush, the skill of construction, the personality. It is generally accepted that the most important thing in studying the calligraphy is the way to handle a Chinese brush. But someone thinks that the skill of construction is the most important one. When we compare the calligraphy to a house, the way to handle a Chinese brush is the process in which we make bricks to build a good house. So, even though we have good quality bricks, it is difficult for us to build a beautiful house without the skill of construction. In my opinion, it is the best way to practice the basic way to handle a Chinese brush as well as to study the skill of construction, because I think that we can not produce our own calligraphical work of artistic skill until we mastered the important points of the way to handle a Chinese brush and the skill of construction all at once. Then, what are the principle of the way to ha ndle a Chinese brush and the skill of construction? In this thesis, I considered the principle of the way to handle a Chinese brush as 「the trend of returning to the starting point」 and the principle of the skill of construction as 「the spirit of subduing one’s self and returning to propriety」. That is, in the way of handle a Chinese brush, the good work can be produced by displaying the energy of all the strokes through the process of the stroke’s returning to the starting point. In the skill of construction, all the units which are composed of the characters have the harmonious relationship as a whole by yielding theis own will with the spirit of subduing one’s self and returning to propriety. Therefore, I can conclude that the calligraphy is not the simple visual art which we make by composing the strokes mechanically, but it is the philosophical art which embodies the spirit of subduing one’s self and returning to propriety through the manners of cultivating a friendly harmony without being weak and it keeps the principle of 「returing」(復) based on the spirit of 「humaneness」 as it’s rule.
