During the Joseon era, Seochon(서촌) in Hanseongbu was a scenic town to the west of Gyeongbokgung (palace) under the shadow of Inwangsan (Mt.). As a typical residential district, the village had major landmark facilities such as a royal palace, a fortress, and Sajikdan, an altar complex for worshiping the gods of earth and grain. This district has long been of great historical and cultural importance considering that three royal palaces (Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung) - all burned to the ground during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598-were restored here. The restoration project was undertaken to strengthen royal authority despite strong resistance from powerful courtiers. In addition, there was a government requisitions office and command post nearby which procured supplies for the royal palace. In addition, the core governing body of the Joseon Dynasty was located directly in front of the royal palace. Because of the national symbolic facilities located there (the royal palace, Sajikdan, a fortress, government offices, etc.) and the majestic natural setting with its clear, picturesque streams and the majestic Inwangsan (Mt.) and Bukaksan (Mt.) as backdrops, Seochon attracted many influential families, including those of several Joseon Kings. Over time, royal shrines and clusters of houses sprang up in this district to house the close relatives and the royal family. Seochon, so-called ‘Jangdong,’ was a community of the Andong Kim clan as well. After all, the Joseon Dynasty was governed by the maternal side of the family for six decades during the late Joseon period. In addition, the scenic site near #45, Okin-dong, became a community of the Yeoheung Min clan and later the Haepyeong Yun clan. Actually, these maternal clans were as influential as the King during the late Joseon era. Besides these powerful clans, many celebrities including great scholars and government officials lived in Seochon. In the late Joseon period, this village was home to renowned writers, painters, poets and their descendants (anti-Japanese as well as pro-Japanese) In its early stage, Seochon, which belonged to the northwestern part of Hanseongbu, was a typical residential area. To provide for residents’ education, several modern schools were established there. These included Maedong Elementary School (Korea’s third elementary school), Jinmyeong Girls’ Middle School (which opened in 1906 and was sponsored by a concubine of King Gojong), Baehwa Girls’ Middle School and High School, as well as Baehwa Women’s College (which opened in 1899 under the sponsorship of the Methodist Church). As described above, Seochon in Hanseongbu gradually became an exclusive enclave of influential families during the late Joseon era. For aristocrats and poets both, it was a great place to enjoy the aesthetic beauty of nature. With its picturesque backdrop of granite peaks and cool mountain streams, it was an ideal location for the many ritual ceremonies and cultural events which have been held there over the centuries. Seochon has long been a wonderful location to enjoy the landscape, culture and history of Seoul. Therefore, the restoration of both the natural and urban environment of Seochon and the Inwangsan area as well as the improvement of the quality of life there should be undertaken and strongly promoted just as it was during the Joseon period. Furthermore, I hope that these efforts to restore such a vital historical and cultural space and to improve the natural and biological environment might someday be rewarded with Seochon’s designation as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
